“A letter of disownment?” Mrs. Xu was amused as she looked at Li Weiyin curiously. “Are you sure?”
Li Weiyin’s expression was serious as she nodded her head, “Yes, a letter of disownment.”
“Why?” Mrs. Xu interlocked her fingers and placed her hands gently on top of the documents on the desk.
“Isn’t that the reason why you chose me?” Li Weiyin asked calmly without answering.
Mrs. Xu chuckled. Her eyes were calm and she did not look like she was concealing any feelings, “You are quite clever, but do you know my intention for you after you marry my son?”
This was Li Weiyin’s first time facing someone of this caliber on her own. Mrs. Xu toned down her initial relaxed vibe. Li Weiyin was only 22 and she was there with a request so she did not force herself to remain calm. Instead, she lowered her eyes slightly.
“I think, your intention will be determined by my future performance.”
If she was well behaved, Mrs. Xu had no reason to treat her badly. After all, she would be her legally married daughter-in-law.
If she had any sneaky ideas, she would most likely be swept out the front door.
And, if she acted wildly, a good ending would be prison, and a bad ending would be dying without a trace.
Similarly, if she was smart enough and she did not have any ulterior motives, she may well be trained into the next Mrs. Xu.
Mrs. Xu looked at her with praise, “You have exceeded my expectations.”
“I simply want a family to look like a family,” Li Weiyin said calmly.
Ever since she returned to the Li Family at 7-years-old, she had struggled to fit in. She had already tried, but she was now giving up.
So, she decided to marry into the Xu Family and use the 300 million yuan to cut all ties with the Li Family. Although she was doing it for her own interests, she was also sincere. The Xu Family was simple. They did not expect an exchange of sincere feelings, they just wanted to live in peace, free from calculations and disputes.
“Family…” Mrs. Xu mumbled this word as her lips unconsciously drew a gentle arc. “I have seen your sincerity. But, I must remind you that a letter of disownment has no legal significance.”
Li Weiyin revealed a relaxed smile, “I believe that as long as the Xu Family is still standing, this letter of disownment will be more effective than the law.”
No one disliked flattery, especially when it wasn’t the young woman’s intention. Mrs. Xu was in a good mood so she began to tease, “Since you know this. Then you should know that, as long as the Xu Family is still standing, this letter of disownment makes no difference.”
“It may make no difference for you, but it makes a lot of difference for me,” Li Weiyin emphasized.
“Oh?”
“What’s the difference?” Mrs. Xu asked with interest.
“The difference is…”—Li Weiyin paused for a moment as her eyes cleared—”whether I define myself as a Xu Family member or a Li Family member.”
Perhaps, she still had a slight trace of hope in her heart.
She wanted to know if her family would hesitate if they knew that they had to cut ties and sell her for money.
Cutting ties, especially a blood tie, was not an easy thing.
Even if one was ruthless enough to make the decision, they may not have the heart to actually do it.
She needed them to completely destroy her last bit of humble hope.
That was the only way she could treat them like strangers in the future.
Mrs. Xu had always thought of herself as a hard-hearted person. But, at that moment, as she looked at the delicate girl sitting in front of her, carrying everything on her thin shoulders, she suddenly felt a trace of pity.
