Chapter 22 Breaking Through the City Gate
Once the last of the setting sun had ducked below the horizon, Lucian gave the order to march.
He’d timed everything perfectly.
It would take about three hours to get from the Demonic Forest to the south gate of the city.
The banquet for the City Lord of Kaidi City was to begin two hours later.
When they reached the south gate and began the attack, it was just as the atmosphere of the reception reached its climax.
It was the perfect time to attack.
After three hours of nonstop marching, the army finally arrived at the south gate of the city.
The commotion caused by the demonic creatures was huge. When they were ten kilometers away from the south gate, they were discovered by the soldiers guarding the city.
Lucian already had a countermeasure for this phenomenon.
He quickly ordered a rapid march and a close range attack.
At the same time, the horns of the world sounded on the walls.
As chaos ensue, random shouts echoed off the walls.
“Enemy attack!”
“Archers ready!”
“Close the gates quickly!”
Noisy instructions were being relayed over the walls to Lucian and the others.
Now it was a race against time.
The one who strikes first will get the upper hand.
When Lucian and the others were within five miles of the city wall, they immediately remembered the order.
“Fire!”
As soon as this voice fell, all the demonic creatures saw arrows pouring down on them like a storm.
If this rain of arrows landed on the demon army, it would definitely cause huge damage.
But Lucian was calm about all this.
He quickly gave the appropriate instructions.
“Jackals, raise your shields!”
After receiving the order, the Jackals quickly jumped upward.
At the same time, the big Minotaurs shifted position quickly the moment they jumped, and stood at their feet.
Therefore, they completed the formation in an instant.
The Jackals stood on the Minotaur’s shoulder and raised his green shield high, forming a massive protective shield.
The demon army shrank under the umbrella.
Those arrows clanged off the light shields of the Jackals.
The impact rocked the shield.
However, no matter how dense the arrows
were, they were still unable to break through
this defense.
The rain of arrows lasted more than ten
minutes.
This was mainly because the city guards on
the city wall realized that the rain of arrows were useless against the demon army, so they had no choice but to stop this attack.
During this time, the demon army did not stop marching.
They were slower, but a dozen minutes was enough time for them to reach the foot of the
wall.
At this moment, they were less than a mile
away from the city gate.
The shower of arrows had lost its effect.
“Siege!”
With Lucian’s order, the demon army quickly
attacked the city gate.
The Minotaurs acted as one unit. Attacking
the gates was their mission.
Therefore, they did not hesitate and swung their huge hammers at the city gate. All the Human soldiers who blocked their path were crushed into meat paste.
It would take time for the gates to close.
From the time Lucian had led the army into
sight of the city guards until they’d sprinted under the gates.
During this time, most of the city gates were closed, but they were still not completely blocked off.
The gates were closed from the bottom up,
pulled by slings.
Once such a gate was closed, it would be even harder to breach than ordinary gates. Therefore, Lucian and the others had to take
advantage before the city gate was completely
closed.
The soldiers guarding the city cooperated with the soldiers on the inside.
The soldiers inside the walls strained against
the iron chains.
Meanwhile, the soldiers outside the city wall were desperately pushing up.
These soldiers who had been left outside the city had all accepted their fate.
But to protect their home, they had to.
At this moment, the city gate was less than 5% away from completely closing. As the city guards closed the city gates in
horror, they listened to the screams of their companions outside the city and shivered. Fear coupled with nervousness, coupled with the decreasing number of cooperative forces outside the city.
The closer the gate was raised, the slower it became at this critical moment.
By now the Minotaurs had reached the gate.
These city guards no longer cared about protecting the city gate. Instead, they drew their weapons and turned around to fight.
The Humans knew that they could not coexist peacefully with the demonic creatures. It was useless even if they surrendered.
They had to fight to the death. However, the city guards were generally weak. They could not withstand a single blow
from a powerful Minotaur.
There were a few booming sounds of heavy hammers hitting the ground.
The soldiers outside the walls were all
smashed to pulp. “Quick! Stop the gates from closing!”
By now, Lucian had reached the gates with
the army. He looked at the gates that were about to close and issued an emergency order. The Minotaurs roared at his command. Its huge body bent down, and then it suddenly kicked up.
Because the Minotaurs were too large and cumbersome, although they jumped faster than ordinary people, they still could not
reach the upper edge of the city gate. The gates were about to close completely. If they wanted to break through the city gate, they would have to spend even more effort.
This also bought time for the city guards at the south gate. Using this time, they could inform the
soldiers at the other gates to come to their
aid.
In this way, everything they had prepared for tonight would inevitably go to waste. Lucian was frantic. His plan could not fail.
Suddenly, something clicked in Lucian’s mind.
He thought back to the simulations. He had a casual glimpse as he passed the city gate. He remembered clearly that this was one of the links in one of the chains of the chain portcullis. One of the links was rusted. Due to the high position, it was difficult for ordinary people to notice.
Only he, who had been sitting in the griffin, had seen this up close.
He quickly spoke to the Cat-Eared warrior
beside him.
“Your bodies are good at climbing. I order you to climb to the top of the city gate in an extremely short time and break that chain!” The warrior froze at his command. “Holy Master, are you kidding? That chain is
thicker than our waists. How can that thing break it?”
Lucian said quickly, “We don’t have time to explain now. Remember the third chain on the left. Once you get up there, pull that one specifically! Go! Otherwise, when the gates are completely closed, we won’t have a
chance!”
“Yes!”
The warrior didn’t understand what was
going on, but if Lucian was so sure, he had his
reasons.
Therefore, the two Third Realm Cat-Eared experts quickly climbed up the city gate.
