Chapter 33: Arduous Battle
The armored vehicle of the law enforcement unit was extremely functional. It could maintain a high speed despite traversing rugged terrain.
Ye Wei’s driving abilities were also exceptional. She looked around and scanned the surroundings but couldn’t find any traces of Viper.
“Are you sure that they fled in this direction? I don’t see anyone.”
Wu Peng couldn’t tell her about the Bird scouting drone and could only say that he’d seen a group of people run in this direction from the hill in front.
A few minutes later, they saw two black SUVs traveling at high speeds.
The people in the cars saw the armored vehicle chasing after them, and they immediately rolled down their car windows and started attacking.
The bullets hit the armored vehicle, and sparks flew. Fortunately, the enemy didn’t have any anti-armor weapons, so they couldn’t penetrate their vehicle’s defenses for the time being.
“The other party has two cars, while we only have one. It’ll be a little difficult to capture all of them.”
“That’s fine. Their vehicles aren’t as good as ours. Wu Peng, go and control the Gatling gun. We’ll take care of one car first.”
Wu Peng immediately got down into the Gatling gun’s control station and pressed down on the trigger. The Gatling gun turned for a moment, then started spitting out bullets.
Viper’s SUVs also had anti-bullet capabilities. However, their armor might as well be paper in front of the heavy-duty Gatling gun’s immense firepower.
The armor of the vehicle was torn apart in an instant. The bullets hit everyone in the vehicle, and they immediately turned into a mist of blood.
The SUV was ultimately torn into two under the Gatling gun’s immense firepower.
Ye Wei didn’t bother stopping the car to investigate the SUV. She set her sights on the other escaping vehicle and began her pursuit.
Unfortunately, that car was farther away. Wu Peng tried shooting them with the machine gun, but he couldn’t get an accurate shot at the faraway, moving target.
Wu Peng squirmed back into the car and connected his phone to the Bird scouting drone. He wanted to cause the enemies trouble with the Bird.
However, the Bird’s camera captured a few people who were squatting around the hills a little distance away.
Wu Peng couldn’t help but gasp after he moved closer to the Bird to get a closer look at the situation. A cold sweat immediately ran down his back.
“There’s an ambush! Quickly stop the car!”
Ye Wei was shocked when she heard what Wu Peng said. She immediately stepped on the brake and was about to ask what was going on when she saw a few black dots flying over from far away.
Behind each of the black dots was a trail of white smoke.
“Get out of the car. Hurry!”
Wu Peng only had time to say this before pulling open the door of the car and pouncing out.
Ye Wei also reacted quickly. She kicked open the door of the car and jumped out.
The two of them didn’t dare to stay in their original positions. They made use of the momentum and rolled forward.
They heard a deafening explosion behind them, and a massive wave of heat sent them flying.
Wu Peng was tossed seven meters backward. He felt as if his back had been fiercely hit by a giant steel ammer.
He bled from his nose and mouth.
“Darn it. I’m always the one who ambushes other people, yet today I was the one who got ambushed,” he thought.
Wu Peng knew that the enemies wouldn’t let them off so easily, so he fought back the pain and stood up to search for Ye Wei.
Twenty meters away from him, Ye Wei was lying motionless on the ground.
He staggered over to her. Wu Peng didn’t dare to move her recklessly, as he was afraid that he would injure her a second time.
He took out his binoculars but realized that the lens on one side had been damaged by the explosion just now. Fortunately, the other side could still be used.
He quickly sat down on the ground and observed their surroundings.
A few black figures were running toward them from a faraway hill.
“Ye Wei! Are you still alive?” Wu Peng gently patted Ye Wei’s shoulders to get Ye Wei to wake up, but she didn’t react.
Wu Peng saw that the situation was urgent, and countless thoughts raced through his mind. If he had to choose the safest method, it would be to retreat on his own.
Neither of them would be able to escape if he brought Ye Wei along.
However, Wu Peng emotionally couldn’t accept the thought of leaving her here.
They’d been on their date just an hour ago.
“Cough, cough!”
Ye Wei coughed violently while Wu Peng struggled over what to do.
Wu Peng quickly turned her over and saw that her face was covered in mud and blood.
“I thought you were dead. How do you feel? Can you stand?”
“Cough, cough. My head is dizzy, and my body feels like it’s about to fall apart. I don’t think I’ll be able to move anytime soon.”
Wu Peng observed their surroundings again with his binoculars. The enemy was less than a kilometer away from them.
“The enemy is almost here. Hurry and climb onto my back!”
“You should hurry and run. You won’t be able to escape if you carry me.”
Ye Wei’s mind was still clear even though she was injured. The situation now was extremely dangerous.
The enemies would definitely catch up to them if Wu Peng had to carry her.
At that moment, Daliu’s voice came through Ye Wei’s wireless communication device. “Captain! What’s your position? Why did the armored vehicle’s signal vanish?”
“Daliu, we got ambushed! We’re roughly 15 kilometers to the southeast. Come and help us, quick!”
“We’ll be there immediately!”
Wu Peng managed to feel more confident when he heard that reinforcements were coming.
He didn’t care that Ye Wei had objected. He picked her up and ran as best as he could.
He was confident that if he wasn’t injured, he’d be able to walk 10 kilometers with Ye Wei in his arms without a problem. However, his organs were all in intense pain.
He had just run several meters when his legs went limp, and he stumbled onto the ground. Ye Wei also fell.
“You should hurry and leave! Go and meet up with Daliu and the rest. I’m the captain of the law enforcers. Viper won’t kill me easily!
“They’re a bunch of lunatics who can do anything! Since we can’t escape, we’ll fight them! We’ll win if we last until reinforcements arrive.”
Wu Peng looked around and saw that there was a large pit to the right a little distance away. It could be used as a battle trench.
He used all of his strength to carry Ye Wei to the large pit. Then, he took off their weapons and examined them.
Fortunately, the law enforcement unit’s rifles were all of rather good quality and hadn’t been damaged by the impact of the explosion just now.
He gathered the weapons and grenades that he and Ye Wei were carrying, then took out the binoculars again to observe his enemy’s movements.
The enemies had sent 15 men. They were moving around the wreckage of the armored vehicle, searching for their bodies.
They would definitely search the area nearby if they couldn’t find them.
Wu Peng did a calculation in his head. Daliu and the rest of the reinforcements would need about ten minutes to arrive, even at full speed.
If they could last ten minutes, the enemy would retreat when they saw the reinforcements.
He turned to look at Ye Wei. She might have suffered a concussion from the impact of the explosion, as her limbs weren’t doing what she wanted them to do.
Wu Peng would have to defend against the attacks of all 15 members of Viper alone.
This might be the most arduous battle he’d ever been in since coming to this post-apocalyptic world.
As expected, the members of Viper expanded their search outward when they couldn’t find their corpses.
And three of them started walking over to the pit where Wu Peng and Ye Wei were hiding.
Wu Peng estimated the distance between them. He couldn’t allow the enemy to get too close. They would die if the members of Viper threw a grenade into their pit.
However, the enemy couldn’t be too far away from them, either. He wasn’t in peak condition, so a large distance between them would definitely affect his aim.
The enemy was slowly approaching them. Wu Peng guessed that the distance between them was just about perfect and abruptly poked his head out of the pit. He pulled the trigger and swept the area with his gun before the members of Viper could manage to react.
