Chapter 9: You Know That Fatty

Wang Yuehan noticed that Qiao Lingxiang didn’t reply so he continued to mock her.
“Don’t you know that most of the energy stones outside the city have been found? If you want to search for energy stones, you need to go somewhere further. However, a fatty like you won’t be able to survive in the wilderness. If you want to leave, you should lose some weight first.”
He paused for a moment and added, “Also, haven’t you read the news? Many civilian teams were killed outside. Other teams that went out to seek energy stones haven’t come back. It’s hard to find a team to go out with now.”
When she heard what he said, Qiao Lingxiang’s lofty aspirations got smashed instantly.
Her father accepted a mission to seek out energy stones too. However, her father’s team was different from civilian teams; it was formed by the urban management authorities. It was a more professional academic exploration team.
They probably wouldn’t be in any danger since they had the garrison escorting them throughout their journey. However, they would be traveling further. Her father left a few months ago and hadn’t come back once.
At first, Qiao Lingxiang wanted to search for energy stones around the suburbs of Xiang City. The best scenario was that she would be able to find energy stones and at the same time, find some food for herself.
But based on what the skinny young man said, the energy stones around the suburbs had all been found. She would need to travel further to search for them.
However, obviously, some people in the suburbs were starting to misbehave. Many civilian teams had been murdered. This wasn’t something to trifle around with.
If she wanted to go to the suburbs, she needed to make ample preparations. As a totally defenseless and unarmed fatty, she wouldn’t be able to run away if she encountered any danger.
Thinking about this, Qiao Lingxiang suddenly stood up from the ground and stared intently at the skinny young man.
The skinny young man sneered.
“What is it? Are you going to hit me? Is it hard to accept the truth?”
“I’m going back to school for class.”
Qiao Lingxiang went down the stairs hurriedly. She disregarded the flyers posted on the wall. She lifted her thick legs and continued to walk in the direction of her school while carrying her schoolbag.
She couldn’t stand the hunger anymore. Qiu Chen was in school but she could at least make it in time for lunch if she returned to school now.
After she left, the skinny young man, Wang Yuehan, stood in the cold wind with his stack of pamphlets hand snorted.
“Stupid fatty, she must be crazy!”
He was fed up. He had to work this job every day for survival’s sake. Yet, he still encountered all kinds of strange people.
Qiao Lingxiang left in a rush so she didn’t hear the skinny young man scolding her. She took almost half an hour to rush back to school.
At first, she thought she would get reprimanded the moment she entered the school gates. However, she realized that the guards were gone and the metal gates of Xiang City High School were closed. The small door of the guards’ room was open instead. Qiao Lingxiang entered the school directly and went to the cafeteria.
At this time of the day, the students were still having their last lesson before lunch break. So, when Qiao Lingxiang reached the cafeteria, she was the first to arrive.
Before Qiu Chen could make trouble for her, she wanted to finish her lunch properly.
Yet, unexpectedly, when the auntie at the cafeteria saw her, she smiled and asked, “Did you want to eat that badly? Lessons haven’t even ended yet you already ran down for food. You should eat less. Look at how fat you are.”
As she spoke, she scooped a bowl of soup and a bowl of porridge. She placed the bowls on the service plates and passed them to Qiao Lingxiang.
She continued, “This is the school’s new rule. If you don’t have food coupons, you will only receive this serving.”
The other auntie in charge of serving food behind the counter agreed with her colleague.
“Dinosaur, I think this isn’t bad. You will become healthier if you eat less. Use this chance to lose some weight. Dinosaur, don’t you know that you’re the fattest at our school?”
Qiao Lingxiang repressed the cramping pain in her stomach and looked down at the soup and porridge on her plate. She felt that two bowls of water could be used to substitute for the two bowls of food. They couldn’t be classified as soup and porridge at all.
As she thought about this, she raised her head and looked at the aunties behind the counter. They had smiles on their faces. They looked at her as though her hopeless expression was exceptionally funny to them.
It was as if they were staring at a comedian when they smiled at Qiao Lingxiang.
Was it that funny?
Qiao Lingxiang closed her eyes. Amidst the gazes, she carried her service tray and turned to sit at the dining table. She slowly drank the porridge and the soup bit by bit.
When a person had to live with mocking and teasing for a long time, there was no hardship she couldn’t endure.
That meant everything!
The bell signaling the end of lessons rang. More and more people started to gather in the cafeteria. A bunch of young men walked into the cafeteria happily and noisily.
They were exceptionally vibrant and high-spirited so Qiao Lingxiang glanced at them discreetly. Cen Yi was in the group. He looked over at her. He found it interesting that in this vast cafeteria, he was still able to find a student who got there earlier than them.
Qiao Lingxiang quickly lowered her gaze. She put down the bowl in her hand and got up. She walked out of the cafeteria with her fat body and headed towards the classrooms.
When her fat figure disappeared from the cafeteria entrance, Cen Yi turned and looked in the direction she left.
Lu Zhengqing placed his hand behind his neck playfully and asked lazily, “What are you looking at? Do you know that fatty?”
Cen Yi turned around and looked at Lu Zhengqing with his black pupils. He nodded and said seriously, “My grandparents like her.”
Then Cen Yi continued: “Don’t call her fatty. She has a name.”
Cen Yi didn’t know what her full name was. Everyone he knew called her fatty or dinosaur. His grandparents called her… Xiangxiang?
At this time, Qiao Lingxiang, who left the cafeteria, just wanted to go back to her classroom as soon as possible.
However, when she reached the classroom building of the junior high section, her path was blocked by Qiu Chen and his two sidekicks.
This location was quite good. It was just behind the classroom building of the junior high section, at the edge of a garden under construction.
The garden began construction the year before. Last year, after the apocalypse exploded without any warning, the construction of the garden was paused. Hence, the construction site was a mess. There were blocks and cement everywhere.
As time went by, a few school staff members made the most of this piece of land and opened up this wasteland for farming. They planted some vegetables here.
To this day, there weren’t many students still in school. Half of the junior high section was empty. The senior high section was in the same state. The school cut half of their security team.
Thus, when Qiu Chen blocked Qiao Lingxiang, none of the high school students dared to stop them even though they saw what happened.
No guards came over either.
The students noticed that Qiu Chen’s stance was off so they didn’t dare to interfere even if they wanted to.
Qiao Lingxiang stood on the spot in a daze. When she saw Qiu Chen and his two sidekicks walking over, she smiled in an attempt to fawn on him and tried her best to ask amiably, “What’s the matter?”
