It was in the dead of night.
At a maternity hospital in the City Fu, the icy-cold operating room was a depressing and dismal sight for anyone witnessing.
A slender woman lay quietly on the operating table. Her beautiful and delicate face now looked unusually pale. Her long, blond hair drenched in sweat as they stuck to the clear, white skin on her neck. Her breathing was faint and weak.
As she lay there silently, her eyes were shut tight, while her brows tightly knit in an uncomfortable frown as if she were in pain.
The doctor, who was standing beside her, shook his head sympathetically. Finally, picking up a cold and shiny scalpel, the doctor positioned his hands over the woman’s bloodied lower body.
“We shall commence the abortion procedure now.”
The woman’s eyes trembled after the doctor made the announcement solemnly. Soon, the corners of her eyes turned moist, and a stream of hot tears started to flow.
Her child…
… was gone.
The woman’s pale and slender fingers clenched into fists, grasping at the white sheets beneath her, as she kept her eyes tightly shut.
As she was being pushed out of the operating room, a man in a bloodied white shirt rushed forward. His refined and elegant brows were clearly showing his feelings of anguish and worry.
He anxiously turned to the doctor and asked, “Doctor, how is she?”
The middle-aged doctor looked at him and said dryly, “We were unable to save the child. The mother will need some time to recuperate.”
A wave of relief and joy swept across the man’s face, and he profusely thanked the doctor.
Two hours later, the woman woke up. The man looked at her with a pleasant surprise. His voice was gentle but trembling with excitement as he greeted her. “Chu Qing, you’re awake!”
The woman called Chu Qing only blinked weakly in response to his greetings.
After that, her eyes moved and scanned the hospital ward, but she did not say anything.
She shifted her eyes to the plain, white ceiling as she stared blankly at them, her eyes filled with a distant and lost look. Slowly, her eyes started to get misty.
The silence in the room intensified the sense of glum and sadness that had permeated in the surroundings. The man was sitting on the bed, watching her silently.
After a long while, Chu Qing turned to look at the man. Her pale lips opened slightly as if to say something, and the man immediately leaned closer to hear what she had to say.
“Where is he?”
The man was taken aback. His facial muscles tightened such that the veins on his clean and bare forehead became prominent, as the sides of his jaw tightly clenched.
Her mouth curled into a bitter, knowing smile.
She felt foolish for asking such a foolish question.
She shook her head and reached out to grab the man’s sleeve. “Thank you, Gu Yi’an! Don’t tell him what happened to me. It’s no longer necessary.”
“Sheng Yuchen…”
Gu Yi’an suddenly stood up from the bed, his gentle and kind looking face was now covered in menacing and sinister expressions.
He stood beside the bed, clenching every muscle in his body so tightly that he began to tremble, as though he was struggling very hard to hold himself back from something. Ultimately, he opened the door and dashed out of the hospital ward.
” … ”
Mu Chuqing’s eyes were now filled with a vacant and desolate look. She slowly closed her eyes and gently placed her hand on her stomach. And finally let out a long, slow sigh.
The last thing she had felt in her heart, ultimately vanished into nothingness at the very moment.
……
It had been two weeks now since Mu Chuqing was discharged from hospital and moved back ‘home’ to recuperate. She had not seen him for more than a month.
Xi Shan Villa was her ‘home.’
It was a European style villa, truly splendid and luxurious, the designing so intricate that every line and curve was awe-inspiring. With its high-end, exquisite furniture and grand splendor, it resembled a royal palace.
Yet, the fantasy and romantic atmosphere unique to European culture was nowhere to be felt.
The steadily falling spring rain outside was swept by the cold wind, slamming against the window. The wind seeping through the small gap in the window blew the luxurious purple curtains as they flapped in the air. Its exquisite dark red rose patterns were looking enchanting at night.
The villa was pitch dark. Mu Chuqing tilted her head to look outside the window. Below her messy lock of golden hair, was a small and pale face, only as big as a palm. Her face had an empty smile as she tightly clutched the document in her hands.
In the dead of night, the light from a car’s headlights flashed past the window from outside. Soon after, there were sounds of car doors being slammed shut.
