Extraordinary Voyage - Chapter 23
Chapter 23: Old Friend
In fact, the most direct and effective way at this time would be to go to Alvin himself and ask him for clarification, but Gull was afraid of messing up.
However, as the captain of this battleship, it was inappropriate to get an outstanding young man who was completely unrelated to him involved in his personal feelings.
In fact, if there was a one-in-a-million chance that Gull had been blessed by the goddess and had actually found the son of his best friend, Freeman, Gull was not prepared to talk to him.
It just so happened that, because of his own orders, the victors were cleaning the deck and no one should be in the rooms.
Step… step… step…
Sailing Master Chris was a little strange. Gull looked as though he was in a hurry in the captain’s cabin, but he walked a lot slower than usual, which did not resemble his usual behavior.
However, no matter how slow one walked, one would eventually reach one’s destination.
The sailing master did not ask too many questions. He silently took out the spare key to open Alvin’s door. As the manager of the sailors, he had the authority to do so.
After inviting Gull in alone, Chris, who knew his subordinates very well, closed the door for him and walked away, obviously not wanting to pry into the officer’s secret at all.
As one of the few alternate officers aboard the Silver Wing, Alvin’s room’s condition was decent. There was a wooden bed and a desk, which was much better than the hammocks of the average sailor.
The first thing Gull saw when he walked into the room was Alvin’s unpacked bag on the plank bed.
He took two steps forward and gently opened the bag.
There was nothing valuable inside; the things were as shabby as those owned by young sailors of commoner origin (in fact, Alvin had brought all his valuables with him, such as the money sent to him by Captain Joseph after he got rid of the Blood Anchor).
There were a few changes of clothes, some bottles of medicine, loose change, etc. There was nothing to prove his identity, which made Gull slightly disappointed.
“Do I really need to go and ask personally?” Gull was hesitant and instinctively resisted a choice that could possibly shatter all hope again.
The good news was that he didn’t have to dwell on his next discovery. At the bottom of the bag, in a hidden, lined pocket, he found a small pouch of animal skin tied with a well-worn leather cord.
With the touch of some edges and the metallic sound of a crash, he seemed to figure out what was inside. With trembling hands, he opened the pouch and poured out its contents.
A “seal ring” as a symbol of noble power, a fire-painted brass seal, a noble family crest which had the marks of a huge sea serpent with vertical fins on its back, surrounded by waves.
A mark that even a heraldist might not be able to identify in such a short period of time struck Gull like a bolt of lightning!
“He is… he is really not dead…!”
Holding the items in both hands, Gull muttered with red eyes.
Drip, drip…
Drops of tears fell and hit his palm. At this point, the man who was as strong as granite cried.
“Thank you, goddess! Freeman, your son is still alive!”
…
“Whew! It’s finally done!” Wringing the rag dry, Alvin heaved a sigh of relief. He did not expect his first job aboard a warship to be to clean the deck.
“Sorry! Brother, you’re getting punished with me.” On the other hand, Gary had finished his share of the work and walked over hesitantly to apologize to Alvin.
“I just praised you for being a brave man, and now you’re behaving like that again. We are one on the same boat, don’t dwell over these things! Go back to sleep! Do you need me to go back with you again?”
Alvin scolded Gary jokingly.
“Hehe, no, it’s okay. I’ve already had quite a few people voluntarily call me ‘boss’ when I carried them back. If any of them don’t listen to me, I will just beat them up again.” Gary rubbed his hands and said he could handle it.
Looking at Gary, who was gradually getting used to the violence, Alvin could not help but laugh and cry. Had he really indirectly caused this guy to become a violent maniac?
He could only mourn for the men who slept with him, as Alvin could not help them.
As the sailing master said the ship had just returned to the port, the crew had all gone ashore to have a good time, so the welcome banquet would be postponed to the next day.
The two men could only return to their cabins. Looking at the darkening sky outside, Alvin wondered how the food on the ship was.
As soon as he reached the door of his cabin, his face instantly changed. His door was unlocked—someone had gone into his room!
He was still not familiar with the situation on the ship since he had just boarded it today. Was it a thief or just someone he knew? Was it possible that some veterans still wanted to take revenge?
As he was not sure about the identity of the intruder, Alvin slowly drew his sword from his waist and gently pushed the door open.
Then… he closed the door again.
“Sob, sob, sob…”
“What the hell? Why is there a grown man crying in my room? And why does he look familiar? Is there anyone else I know on the boat besides Gary?”
Alvin took a few steps back and then looked at the brass sign on the door again. Alvin, who had data vision, would definitely not go into the wrong room.
After stroking his chin and thinking for a moment, he was sure that he did not have any valuables in his bag. The only things of some value were the family crest and seal, which were the only things related to the Garriott family. Now these items no longer had any significance and were worth nothing.
After confirming that there was probably no danger, Alvin put away his sword, pushed the door open again, and walked in.
It was the same man in the room.
However, the scene was completely different. He was sitting on his bed with a dignified face, as if he was not in a bedroom but a command room in a battlefield.
Alvin wondered if his eyes were playing a trick on him.
Alvin had never seen most of the ship’s crew before, but he recognized the officer’s uniform that the man was wearing. He had not noticed it before, but now he could not pretend not to see it, and he could not violate the basic military discipline no matter what.
Alvin immediately stood at attention and saluted, “Good day, Sir!”
Alvin then felt the officer look at him from head to toe for a while, giving him goosebumps. Then the officer said slowly, “Alvin Garriott?”
Uh… Yes.” Although he felt that the officer’s tone was a little strange and the man was slightly odd, thinking that he would be his subordinate for the future years, Alvin had to endure!
Even though his name was confirmed by a stranger, Alvin did not feel anything odd about it. Most of the people related to the name were no longer alive, and the only people who might have had a connection were his enemies in Ilia, though they would not be able to find him.
