Tong Sanlang then stood up and went to invite Dr. Wu over.
Dr. Wu did a simple treatment for Mrs. Zhang, fiddling around until late into the night before leaving.
When Tong Sanlang entered the room again, Qiao Xiaomai was boredly cutting out window flower patterns with a pair of scissors. Seeing him enter, she quickly put her stuff away. “How is my mother?”
“Not very well, she has to rest in bed for a month.”
Upon hearing this, Qiao Xiaomai let out a sound, and lifted her hand to touch her nose.
Well… at least she could be peaceful for a month.
Cough, she couldn’t show such thoughts, so she gestured to Tong Sanlang to come over, “Come, go to bed.”
Tong Sanlang did not say much and went to bed as instructed.
The two didn’t talk, and the night quickly passed.
In the morning, the two of them got up to prepare breakfast.
According to the usual practice, after getting married, all the wives should take turns in cooking.
But now Zhu Hongyun had gone back to her parent’s home, and Li Rou claimed she was tired from taking care of the two children, so Xiaomai ended up being the one in charge of cooking.
Qiao Xiaomai didn’t mind this. After all, they were about to divide the property.
This was the last meal before they divided the family property.
She boiled a pot of white rice, corn, and jujube porridge, fried eggs, cooked vegetable pancake, and at last, stir-fried pig meat.
This breakfast was quite abundant in the Tong Family. After eating, Tong Xingda’s face turned even grimmer, and he sat by the dining table, not moving.
Tong Tiehu swallowed the last mouthful of porridge, and then put down his chopsticks. He looked at everyone at the dining table and said, “Everybody, start packing up.”
“Xiaomai, go back home and get a bullock cart to help move things.”
Bed and cupboard, things like these are large items, two bullock carts wouldn’t be enough.
Qiao Xiaomai nodded. “Alright.”
It was also like a statement to Qiao Changsun, that finally the family was being split.
Then Qiao Xiaomai went back to the Qiao Family, and before Qiao Changsun left to work in the field, she set aside a bullock cart.
Indeed, when Qiao Changsun heard her words, he was very happy. Mrs. Zhang’s illness got better, Qiao Xiaomai had obvious effects in bringing good luck, and now the Tong Family were dividing up the family, as promised during the marriage proposal. From now on, Qiao Xiaomai and Tong Sanlang would live in the old courtyard, it would be quiet and comfortable.
“In my opinion, you and Sanlang shouldn’t ask for anything. You guys should buy new pots, bowls, plates, and basins from the town. As for the land, those dozen or so acres, it’s not worth fighting with them over.” Qiao Changshun said.
According to his thoughts, if Qiao Xiaomai and Tong Sanlang acted generously, not causing any disputes, try to treat the other members of the Tong Family as well as possible, and be polite.
After listening to these words, Qiao Xiaomai was somewhat speechless, “Dad, if that happens, wouldn’t Sanlang be considered as marrying into our family?”
“How could he be considered as marrying into our family? The two of you will be living in the Tong family’s old courtyard.”
“After the manor is completed, both of us will move over there. By that time, if Sanlang lives in our house and hasn’t taken anything from the Tong family, wouldn’t that be considered as him marrying into our family?”
This would sever the connection between Tong Sanlang and the Tong Family. Certainly, Tong Tiehu and Tong Xingda would not be willing.
“I didn’t consider it thoroughly.” Qiao Changsun said, rubbing his hands together, “You guys figure it out.”
With Qiao Xiaomai’s character, she wouldn’t suffer losses.
“I have made a decision, you don’t have to worry.” Xiaomai replied, then led the bullock cart back to the Tong Family.
When she returned, the Tong Family’s two bullock carts were already fully loaded. Seeing her return, Tong Sanlang began to load stuff onto the cart she brought back.
Only Qiao Xiaomai and Tong Sanlang were left in the Tong Family’s old courtyard; all the other items had to be moved to the new house.
The three bullock carts took a whole morning to move all the stuff from the old courtyard to the new house, big items like tables and cupboards, and small ones like brooms and spatulas were all moved over.
Qiao Xiaomai didn’t take any of the pots, bowls, plates, and basins. All were moved to the new house.
