When Li Ang opened his eyes again, he found himself sitting cross-legged on the ground of a farming hall and holding onto a box of poker cards while he sat in front of three villagers who were dressed plainly.
At the moment, his mind was filled with information related to the quest.
Based on the system description, the scripted quest would place the players in an independent dimension. The players had to play a certain role and complete the quest issued by the system.
During this process, players could wear equipment, use items, and release extraordinary powers. Most odd behavior would not confuse aboriginal people. Of course, they would invite trouble if they overdid it.
For this quest, Li Ang played the role of a young villager of the Hidden Mountain Village called Feng Tiechui.
The Hidden Mountain Village was located deep within the mountain. It was remote, poor, abandoned, and uneducated, which had always been the description of this small village.
Despite the rapid development and changes in science and technology in the outside world, the remote Hidden Mountain Village maintained its peaceful tranquility. When the road that led outside the mountain had been paved, a flood of information from the outside world had finally broken through all obstacles and brought vitality to the Hidden Mountain Village.
The quest briefing ended there. Li Ang unhurriedly examined the assembly hall of the village before him.
The inside of the building was quite large. The triangular roof was made of logs, the building was two floors high, and the ground was covered in bumpy concrete tiles.
In addition, the gray walls were covered with cracks, and handmade wooden chairs sprayed with black mottled paint were stacked on both sides of the hall.
It could be inferred that this hall had existed for at least 40 to 50 years. A black-grayish wooden coffin was on a platform that was as tall as a human.
It was night time right now. The door of the assembly hall was wide open, and a vast sky full of stars could be seen.
The chilling night breeze blew in through the door, igniting the incandescent lamp hanging down from the dome of the assembly hall. Light and shadow circulated, making the gray coffin shine brightly on the platform.
Four villagers, including Li Ang, sat cross-legged near the door of the assembly hall with a few old newspapers under their butts. There was a pile of poker cards stacked on the newspapers between them.
“Two 10!”
“Two J!”
“Two K!”
The game was conducted in a heavy atmosphere. The four of them were not playing for entertainment but to survive the difficult night with the solitary coffin.
Feng Tiejia, a villager sitting across Li Ang, said casually, “That b*stard Feng Tiegen! I’m here, yet he asked us to keep watch while he took his wife to the county.”
Feng Tieyi, who was sitting at the top left side of Li Ang, said, “Don’t say that. Didn’t he go to the county for the Certificate of Death and Funeral of Residents?”
“Nonsense!” Villager Feng Tiejia said with a sneer. “He caused his own mother’s death, but he still has the nerve to do that?”
Villager Feng Tieyi and Villager Feng Tiebing’s expressions changed. They stiffly glanced at the coffin deep in the assembly hall and whispered, “Don’t spout nonsense!”
“I’m spouting nonsense? What did I say that was wrong?” Feng Tiejia said indifferently. “When he was young, his mother raised him with difficulty. Even when the whole village was going to gnaw on bark from hunger, she did not let him go hungry. However, ever since he married his wife, he built a house and refused to pay for his mother’s treatment.”
Feng Tiejia’s whole body shivered while Feng Tieyi and Feng Tiebing also looked gloomy and did not utter a word.
Feng Tiegen’s behavior would, of course, shame him and the villagers of the Hidden Mountain Village would always pick on him. However, dignity was not essential for scum like him.
Li Ang, whose back was facing the coffin, had some thoughts. Based on the quest description, the zombie he had to eliminate was probably the old lady in the coffin, who had been starved to death by her own son.
However, the quest mentioned that he had to eliminate a zombie and not a corpse, which meant that the corpse had to be created before he could meet the quest conditions. If he made a move too early, he might trigger a sudden movement of the corpse or other terrible consequences.
In the eyes of the three villagers, Li Ang, who played the role of an ordinary villager, was wearing plain clothes. In fact, he was fully armed and could participate in individual combat at any time.
This argument filled the repressed hall with more silence. The four people appointed by the village to keep watch played round after round of poker.
Suddenly, an undetectable ‘click’ was heard in the hall, blending with the sound of the wind blowing the leaves outside the building at night.
Feng Tiejia, who was sitting facing Li Ang, was holding two poker cards and was just about to discard them when his face suddenly changed. The poker card he held in mid-air trembled slightly, and his eyes were filled with fear.
He saw the coffin inside the assembly hall slowly opening. A thin arm covered with white long hair slowly stretched out of the wooden board and grabbed the coffin cover.
The coffin board, which was made of wood, was quite heavy but it looked as light as a feather thanks to the white-haired arm.
The white-haired arm set the coffin cover aside on the ground in a slow, rigid, smooth, swift manner. No sound was made throughout the whole process. Everything was terrifyingly quiet.
A cold current rushed down Feng Tiejia’s spine as he made an unclear Ho-Ho-Ho sound with his throat while glaring at the front.
The old lady’s body, which had decomposed long ago, slowly stood up in the coffin like broken chopsticks.
Her body was covered in long white hair, and her empty eyes stared blankly at the four people playing cards in front of her.
As if he had been electrocuted, Feng Tiejia dropped the poker cards in a panic and said, “I… I’m going to the toilet outside. Are you guys coming along?”
“What for? Just find a bucket to relieve yourself,” said Feng Tieyi in confusion. The four of them were sitting down cross-legged. From his position, he could not see the changes in the corpse.
“I’m afraid of the dark! Come with me!” Feng Tiejia whispered.
Feng Tiebing curled his lips. “I’m not going. Go by yourself.”
Feng Tiejia gritted his teeth, turned, and ran out of the assembly hall toward the illuminated part of the village.
