Chapter 43
It was important to review before arriving at the maid school.
They must carefully examine the servants that are good to hire. It’d be wise to do everything in advance because work would be piled up when the reformation begins.
‘That way, Carlyx will be able to rest a little.’
Carlyx leaned toward her when she took out the documents. Even though the carriage was quite large, they sat close to each other. Their shoulders brushed lightly as if tickling each other.
“Valet, maid, servant, gardener, cook. These are the people we need to hire. But what’s this? There’s a small asterisk next to the valet.”
“I think we should find someone who fits the valet position slowly. I still don’t have enough information, so I need to look into it more thoroughly.”
Valet was a servant who assists Carlyx, just like May to Daisy. As Carlyx was currently inactive, the search for a valet was put on hold.
Her head was about to explode thinking all that.
“We should change the servants as soon as possible.”
When Daisy’s gaze reached the end of the page, Carlyx turned over the document. His shoulder touched hers briefly before moving away. A voice filled with warmth lingered in the space.
“It seems you’ve gathered rumors.”
“That’s the letter you saw last time. It’s become much easier now that they are cooperating to clarify the rumors.”
In fact, even though there were no guests, Marquisate of Jean was the busiest recently. The servants helped uncover the issues and clarified every confusion.
They stayed up every night thinking about how to help.
Daisy felt at ease as she gained strength from many people.
“I’ve sorted out some potential hires. I think some of the applicants are not bad. Tyler interviewed them, and they seemed like decent servants.”
“The fact that they applied for a job at Marquis Jean was already questionable. And how do you know what their personality is like through a short interview?”
“That was also my concern when they applied as if nothing happened. But then again, the incident of my stolen jewelry made big news in society. The whole Empire knew that we were looking for new people.”
“Seems like the reputation of Marquis Jean didn’t really matter for them.”
“Even if there are rumors going around, our family has a higher salary than other households, not to mention gaining the title of working in a prestigious family such as Marquis Jean. I’m sure there are a lot of contributing factors.”
Most of them came from small towns. Therefore, they would dream about applying to the upper class aristocrats’ households while working for lower class aristocrats. Rather than vanity and arrogance, they would still burn with passion.
“I’m sure there’s a lot to teach because they worked in a small family before coming to our family, so I picked them because most of them had a resolute goal.”
“How did you know about their goal?”
“They have worked as page boys and hall boys since they were young. They worked steadily without a break and climbed their way up little by little. They had a big dream and ambition.”
Page boy and hall boy were an apprenticeship that boys took when they were young. Most of them do not last long because they were in charge of hard and cumbersome tasks while enduring mistreatment by older people. Those selected servants grew up persisting through such pain.
“Were they recommended by someone?”
“Nope.”
At her relaxed answer, Carlyx’s eyes grew a little wider. It was important for a nobleman to consider the letter of recommendation in hiring an employee. Furthermore, the servants didn’t seem to have a familial track record at all. For example, his father was a butler or his mother was a maid-in-waiting.
This was an important factor regarding the assessment. Due to the unexpected revelation, Carlyx tilted his head and calmly commented.
“You’re hiring a little bit differently. I honestly thought you’d follow the standard procedures.”
Of course, he knew Daisy was always making unpredictable moves so far, but now he thought she’d finally follow the customs of the nobles. Since she said their goal now was to climb little by little from the bottom.
“Surely, I followed the procedures.”
Daisy replied coolly and added in a firm tone.
“I won’t lose my principles just because I have to follow the procedures. And following the procedures strictly is only done when there are many eyes and ears around.”
In other words, she only does it on the basis of necessity. Certainly, the message she wanted to convey was not wrong.
Carlyx turned the documents to the next page faster than before. This time, information about gardeners and chefs was written in detail.
There were several names, but he could see the candidates who caught his attention.
Amelia and Carter.
Carlyx mulled over their unfamiliar names.
“Nothing has been decided yet. I asked Tyler to look into it more.”
At her words, Carlyx let go of the documents and leaned his back comfortably against the seat. Complicated emotions passed over his placid face. The moment Carlyx lifted his face, a low grumble rang in the wagon.
“Grroaaa mmhnyamnyam.”
Oh my, did I just hear it right?
Daisy immediately turned to River. River smacked his lips while hugging his pillow tighter.
“Groaa umhnyamnyam.”
‘I’ve never heard a snore that sounded like a song in my life!’
Excited, Daisy pursed her lips and listened closely.
“Grooa nyahnanan.”
“River is saying ‘I’m happy to go on a trip together.’”
“That’s not true. He just snored and mumbled in his sleep.”
Whether he knew Daisy and Carlyx had a small argument, River closed his lips. Soon, his tiny face was buried deep in the pillow.
For a moment, Daisy bit her lower lip due to the cuteness. There was a ‘I’m cute’ tag on top of his head!
“Mhmnana groooa..”
Daisy responded to River’s groan.
“He said ‘My stepmother is the best!’”
At her exclamation, Carlyx responded with a sigh. She expected him to scold her for saying nonsense, but he said something else in his usual calm voice.
“He should say that he likes his father first.”
“……”
At his unexpected remark, Daisy turned to Carlyx with a shocked expression.
Well, it was unfamiliar but not bad.
‘You insist on being mentioned first, but you don’t refute that I’m the best.’
While Daisy and Carlyx stared at each other for a while, River buried himself into the pillow more deeply.
“Grrooagrooa nyamnyamnana.”
As another groan reverberated they came to an agreement.
“Let’s say he likes his father and that his stepmother is the best after that.”
Carlyx did not refute anything this time. Daisy, who felt that they got closer, smiled satisfactorily.
“I’m gwooing to carry this.”
“No, leave it. Not only you, but you’ll cause trouble to your stepmother, your sister, and I if you bring this.”
“…I-I don’t want to cause twouble. But I can’t let gwoo of this.”
Carlyx stood in front of the carriage door and River sat inside the carriage as the two argued.
The situation was roughly like this.
River wanted to bring his messenger bag with him. He was stubborn even though he promised not to bring it outside.
Carlyx vowed with a sharp expression that they wouldn’t go anywhere unless River let go of the bag.
Despite Carlyx’s firmness, River shook his head. The child did not back down and repeated the same words.
A noble child carrying a shabby messenger bag that a fisherman usually carries.
Some people would notice even if Caryx covered his black hair with a hat. So the rumor that Marquis Jean was coming to the capital was something to be taken into account.
Not with River, though. How would anyone prevent rumors about his legs?
Even if Carlyx carries River everywhere, he should eliminate any room for anyone to notice. But if River doesn’t leave his bag, it would be hard to evade people’s attention.
“Stop whining, River. This is not the mansion where you play everyday.”
Carlyx purposely spoke coldly. Responding to his cold tone, River whined a little and bowed his head.
“Still, still, I have to gwoo with my metinger bag. I’m rweally sorry to my swepmother and sister and daddy who are in trouble bwecause of me, but…..I can’t go without this.”
“River, you shouldn’t think that everyone will just listen to what you say or accept your behavior no matter what. Stop complaining and leave it there.”
Despite Daisy’s glare, Carlyx didn’t feel like stepping down at all. Daisy tried to take a step forward, but she couldn’t because someone blocked her. Obstructed by his wide shoulders and tall height, Daisy raised one of her eyebrows.
‘Huh, would you look at this person? I have to say something, why are you interrupting me?’
Then he didn’t leave her any choice either.
Daisy stepped on Carlyx’s feet with heels. Perhaps it hurt him quite a bit, his head gradually turned toward her.
At that moment, Daisy shoved Carlyx aside as hard as she could. Now she stood in front of River.
“River, my dear. Is a messenger bag so precious to you? Or is ‘this’ messenger bag so precious to you?”
