Chapter 47
When they arrived at the Director’s office, Sera handed Daisy a piece of paper. Scores were written next to the candidate names.
“Please take a look at the report. All three candidates that Madam will meet today are specially arranged students with outstanding grades. You may conduct an interview and sign a contract with the one you chose.”
It was a simple procedure.
But they were short one more person. At least three people had to be taken. That was the appropriate number and it was beneficial to Sera in many ways.
Daisy tapped her lips and uttered softly.
“I’m going to take three people from here today.”
Sara bit her lip at Daisy’s remark. After a while, she fixed her expression and spoke softly.
“Of course, it’d be a great pleasure for us if Madam is willing to take three people. But there are only three children who are ready, and we can’t send all of them to the marquisate due to the current situation.”
Daisy nodded for now. She made up her mind to listen to everything first.
“We are the only Maid School in the capital, so many other aristocrats visit us. We got a lot of requests for housekeepers.”
When there was no complaint from Daisy, Sera continued her explanation more leisurely.
It was natural to be sidelined as someone who wasn’t classified as a sponsor. It meant someone who didn’t contribute much shouldn’t be too stubborn.
Daisy slowly crossed her arms, raising one corner of her mouth. Sera noticed Daisy’s slightly offended gesture and swiftly twisted her words.
“It’s such an honor for us if the Marquis family took our maid. Our students wouldn’t refuse this glorious chance to be part of the Marquis family.”
“It’s such an honor, but you won’t allow me to take the three of them, is that what you mean?”
“It’s truly such an honor for me, that’s why I picked students with the highest grades today! You may take one of them.”
So Daisy could only choose one of them.
Daisy, still wearing a smile, looked down at the paper.
Some of them looked familiar, some of them were unfamiliar names. Information Daisy collected through the servants so far passed her mind.
“Are you sure there’s no mistake in the grades of the students on this list?”
“It’s a little hard to understand what you mean, Madam.”
“That’s exactly what I mean.”
“Of course. Their skills were proven through a fair test. They may not have been able to reveal their skills depending on their condition. But isn’t having a condition a skill, too?”
Daisy glanced briefly at Carlyx watching her. She made an expression as if she wanted him to pay attention from now on.
“The students you recommended are good, but there is a student that caught my eyes more than them.”
Not only did the Master ignore the grades, she also chose a student who wasn’t on the list at all.
Even though Sera was bewildered, she still asked with a cordial smile.
“Who would you want me to bring?”
“Umm, this child, and this child.”
Daisy pointed to the names one by one. Her fingers swept the paper to the end and remained.
Raising her head, Daisy said with a deep smile.
“And the one that’s not here. Natalie. Please call Natalie.”
“Madam, Natalie is not ready yet. We will be deeply embarrassed if you see her without proper preparation. I think it’s difficult for me to do that.”
“Please call Natalie. I saw her on my way here. She’s currently taking a lesson, right?”
Orange hair wasn’t common. Moreover, according to the kids who just graduated from here, she was the only one with orange hair at school.
“I said this more than once already, so aren’t you going to bring her in?”
Daisy gestured at the door and added sternly.
“Hurry up and start the interview. Because I don’t have time.”
Sera had been hesitating and stood in front of them with an awkward smile. Unlike before, the way she walked forward seems listless.
They entered a room with three chairs. Two wooden chairs were placed near a large window, one in front.
Sera looked at Daisy and sat down with a small sigh. Daisy sat down next to her, and Carlyx stood beside her, doing his knight’s duty.
The interview commenced fully.
“Come inside.”
A brown-haired girl with pigtails came in.
“Hello. I’m very honored to have the opportunity to greet you like this.”
The girl sat down, squirming her fingers.
“Your name is Va-Ne-Ssa.”
Her name was familiar. According to the servants, she wasn’t supposed to enter the list of students with outstanding grades. It was the opposite.
Thus, Sera’s intention could be read easily.
There’s no way I will send my best maid to a cursed family like the Marquisate of Jean.
Daisy calmly cooled her head and tapped on the paper she received earlier. Looking back at the report she read in the carriage, there was no one with outstanding abilities as Sera claimed.
This list was a lie.
Even though she was a troublesome person, the current housekeeper of the Jean family had wide connections. Surprisingly, she used to arbitrate complaints or give counseling to other families’ servants.
Since Daisy was able to gather credible information from the housekeeper, now she clearly saw the disparity in Sera’s list.
‘Vanessa and the next child in line are also students with low grades.’
If you take them without knowing their actual ability at first, you will end up teaching them one by one in detail. If so, the Marquisate would be ruined even more than now.
There was nothing to gain and nothing will improve.
It was such an unfavorable situation.
Daisy put down the quill, smiled and began the interview.
“Vanessa Tantra.”
Vannesa’s eyes became round when her last name was mentioned. Meanwhile, Sera clenched her skirt. She had a bad feeling about this.
“You know it’s an interview to hire you in the Marquisate of Jean, right?”
“Oh, yes! Yes, yes. I’ve been looking forward to this day.”
“I’m going to ask some questions to pick a maid that suits our needs.”
“Yes! Yes, yes.”
Daisy first asked for personal information and personality questions. The tension that filled the room subsided, and Sera looked relieved. She judged that the ominous feeling earlier was an illusion.
Carlyx walked a few steps back and leaned his back against the wall. His gaze touched Daisy’s relaxed expression.
‘I don’t think this much is enough .’
He was certain.
He had read dozens of letters in such a short time. He heard that she even gave special vacations to the chef and housekeeper who helped gather information.
The scale of work was large to hire only one maid.
‘But it’s not easy to take three maids.’
That was the established system in the social world and the Maid School itself.
It wasn’t unsightly for a nobleman to hire three maids at once, just as it was unsightly for the head of the Maid School to send three maids at once.
Nobles valued discretion. And in their world, objects or people that are hard to have are bound to look tempting.
In that sense, the hiring procedure of the famous Maid School was quite tricky. Moreover, this place was located in the capital city, Itarin.
Unless it was under special circumstances, there was always only one maid available at this Maid School. That was an implicit rule.
But now the Marquisate of Jean was in a dire need to hire three maids at once.
However, that wasn’t the case for Sera, the head of this Maid school.
The Marquis Jean had that famous stolen jewelry case that sparked public opinion, but Sera had neither intention nor justification for giving away three maids at once.
If Daisy took the three maids, Sera had no reason to explain her action.
‘In the future, there’ll be another noble who will pressure her by mentioning the Marquisate of Jean.’
It was also an act that could become a thorn in Countess Tonstain’s eyes. Even the Tonstain family that sponsored the Maid School would be affected by this.
In any case, Sera had no reason to bend over.
However, even though he knew about this face, he felt the result would be different for some reason.
He couldn’t take his eyes off Daisy.
“Hmm. Then I’m going to ask a more serious question from now on.”
Daisy’s sky colored eyes looked straight into Vanessa’s.
A soft gleam in her straight gaze. Those were the eyes full of confidence whenever she was committed to something.
“Attendants during a meal. The parlor and the front door are usually attended by…..”
Vanessa, who hastily predicted Daisy’s entire question, raised her hand.
Daisy beckoned her to lower her hand slowly, and continued the question.
“…Servants or butlers. Especially in high-ranking nobles’ residences or large mansions. During this time, what else is important other than their work ability?”
Perhaps it was an unexpected question, as Vanessa bit her lip. She took turns looking at Daisy and Sera, and finally opened her mouth.
“Personality is more important above anything else. Especially if you are a butler, I think you should be someone who can embrace other people. I think servants should be able to blend in with other servants.”
“Will their good personalities actually help my family?”
Vanessa nodded slowly to Daisy’s strange question. Daisy looked at her as if she expected such an answer and moved on.
Soon after, the heavy interview continued at a faster pace than before.
“What’s the basic duty of a maid?”
“Sorry? Do you mean, all of them? What kind of maid’s work are you talking about?”
“Anything is fine.”
In addition to housekeeper and Ladies Maid, there was a Chambermaid in charge of cleaning and organizing bedrooms and a Laundry Maid in charge of laundry.
