Two days later, much to his surprise, Cheng Zhiyan found a letter addressed to him beside his pillow.
On the envelope, the characters that spelled Cheng Zhiyan were printed in a neat handwriting.
Cheng Zhiyan picked up the letter, gave it a few strange glances, and tore it open. A piece of paper fell out from inside.
It was an exceedingly ordinary piece of white paper with a bunch of doodles scribbled all over it. There were straight lines that haphazardly intersected with wavy lines. There was absolutely no telling what on earth it meant.
Cheng Zhiyan stared at the piece of paper in confusion and turned around and headed out of his room to call out to his mother, who was busy cooking downstairs, “Mom, where did this envelope by my pillow come from?”
“That…” Cheng Zhiyan’s mother turned off the stove and came out to answer her son, “that’s a love letter from Xiaotu. She specifically instructed me to leave it on your bed.”
“You mean this? This love letter?” With his eyebrows raised, Cheng Zhiyan shook the paper in his hand and pointed to all the messy lines.
“Hee, hee, hee, Xiaotu is only three years old. Since she can’t write, she can only draw.” Zhou Yue chuckled a little awkwardly as she defended her future daughter-in-law.
“…” Cheng Zhiyan couldn’t help but roll his eyes. “What are the things she scribbled on here? Did she tell you?”
“She did tell me.” Zhou Yue wiped both of her hands on her apron, then took the white paper from Cheng Zhiyan’s hands and matter-of-factly pointed to one of the circles as she explained, “Xiaotu said that this circle represents you, while the circle next to it represents her, and the smaller circle represents the child between the two of you.”
“…” Cheng Zhiyan was thoroughly dumbstruck.
“There’s still more…um…I didn’t really understand what she was saying either…” Zhou Yue chuckled a little awkwardly, and then she shoved the piece of white paper back into her son’s hands and turned around, saying, “I’m going to continue cooking. If there’s something you don’t understand, you can just ask Xiaotu.”
“…” Cheng Zhiyan silently held the paper in his hand, and, after staring at it for a while, he returned to his room.
That night, Xiaotu came over to play with Cheng Zhiyan as usual.
“Brother Orange Juice, Brother Orange Juice, did you get the love letter I wrote you?” As soon as she’d rushed in, Xiaotu clung to Cheng Zhiyan’s arm and asked him excitedly.
“I got it.” Cheng Zhiyan hesitated for a moment, then he nodded.
“Did you look at it?”
“I looked at it.”
“Was my writing good?
“It was good,” Cheng Zhiyan replied untruthfully.
“Hee, hee, hee. Then I’ll write love letters to you every day from now on.” Xiaotu clung to Cheng Zhiyan’s arm and rubbed her little head against him as she thought over something for a little while. Suddenly, she opened her mouth and asked, “Brother Orange Juice?”
“Huh?”
“What is lovemaking?”
“Huh?” Cheng Zhiyan was caught completely off guard as he glanced down at Xiaotu’s innocent face.
“And when two people kiss, why does one person have to eat the other person’s lips?”
“…”
“And, how are children born?”
“…”
“Brother Orange Juice, why aren’t you answering me?”
“…”
“What’s going on, Brother Orange Juice? Why are you sweating?”
“…” Cheng Zhiyan reached out to wipe the sweat from his forehead and smiled at Xiaotu a little awkwardly. Then he left the room without saying a word.
