If You Don’t Remember Me - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I couldn’t feel my lips because I bit them so hard.
Anais covered her face with her hands as she thought of how unlucky she was for believing such a god.
Her marriage was now delayed, and she was still not a direct family member.
“Lady Anais!”
As the door of the room opened, Logan appeared, nervous.
“You just woke up.”
“…….What’s the status?”
“For me, I think it seemed rather normal. Come with me and have a look.”
After Anais stared at my trembling hands, she clenched her fists and stood up.
Logan breathed a sigh of relief.
Mourning still filled the atmosphere of the mansion, but thankfully, the head of the house was not lost and pregnant Anais was not left alone.
The door leading to Todd’s room was left wide open because both the doctor and the maid were going in and out.
Anais entered the room, walking slowly past Logan, without realizing the light leaking through the door.
“Todd!”
On the bed lies a young man who looked like he had just woken up.
Dark hair spread over the pillow, a high nose, lush lips and eyes so bright and blue.
It was the same man she knew before.
‘You’re not hurt.’
Anais held back the feeling of wanting to sit down and approached Todd.
“Are you alright? I was so surprised when I heared that the carriage was almost completely destroyed….”
“…….”
Anais couldn’t keep herself from asking him, but forced herself not to let tears run down her face.
The person who’s supposed to cry isn’t me, but Todd.
His mother, Darya, who was in the carriage with him when the accident happened, died instantly at the scene.
I had to use a horse instead of a carriage because I didn’t know whether or not he knew what happened already.
“Well, do you remember that day?”
While Todd was unconscious, the funeral ceremony was over.
Anais thought that this was a more urgent issue compared to the words of concern she wanted to say.
But Todd didn’t reply.
As soon as he saw Anais, the man who would have held her in his arms, only looked at her crying face.
He was acting so strange that Logan, the deputy, held his breath.
‘What’s wrong with him?’
The noble, Duke Todd Henick, who had a gruff personality and an awful temper, only managed to find a fiancee after he was a little over the marriageable age.
Since he found himself his first love at a late time, Todd devoted himself to Anais, who was the owner of a teahouse.
Only a person who knew him well would believe that fact.
Duke Sunday’s wife, Duchess Darya, didn’t say much when Todd declared that he would be marrying a woman who was a commoner.
I never knew my calculated and cold son would change like that, Darya thought.
Until then, I thought a fairytale-like love had completely melted the cold and ruthless Duke.
It would have been the same all along if it weren’t for the sudden carriage accident a month ago.
Duke Sunday’s wife, Darya, had died before being rescued.
Todd had been in a state of coma for a month.
If he had been asleep for so long, he would have missed his fiancee, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
He only looked at Anais quietly with a look of unknown emotion.
“Todd?”
As the silence prolonged, Anais started to feel anxious.
Even then, Todd kept looking at the woman in front of him without saying anything.
The tears falling from those big eyes, and the hand that was desperately clinging to me felt awkward. Her thin fingers that seemed so fragile intertwined with my hand making me feel more helpless than ever.
As soon as she touched my body, which had always been tense, a strange sense of relief spread sharply to my chest.
Todd concluded that this was an unpleasant feeling.
“Logan.”
He kept his eyes on Anais even when he called Logan.
Logan, who had been standing behind him, tried to answer calmly.
“I’m here.”
“Who is this?”
As soon as Todd said those words, Anais’ eyes opened wide and stopped moving.
Logan frowned as soon as he heard it.
‘Why is he still pulling pranks at times like these?’
The prank was far too unreasonable for Anais, who had been struggling for a month after hearing the news about Todd.
“Hey. What nonsense are you saying?”
“I’m asking you. What is that thing?”
Todd was asking what she was, as if Anais, who was in front of him, was an object.
With a shiver run down his spine, Logan replied.
“……This is Anais.”
“Lady Anais?”
Todd finally stopped looking at Anais when he said her name, as if he didn’t know her. He slightly raised his eyebrows in confusion.
Anais’ expression became blank.
Logan, who had been serving as a comander in the army, was the eldest son of a viscount.
The moment he saw her, he wanted to slap her in the face.
This woman, who does not look like a noble, was asking if you, who is a self-composed spirit, would be a person to honor.
‘Who was the one who beat me up like a dog when I didn’t respect Anais because of such words!’
Logan once had an uncomfortable time with Anais. No matter how much Todd loved her, she was still a commoner.
He was the one who told me to respect her at all costs, but now who’s disrespecting her?
If you still want to have her as your future wife, don’t blame me if she isn’t willing anymore!
Right now, Logan has already half-forgotten that Anais was a commoner.
She was now a mother, confirmed by Duke Sunday’s close associates, and was ready to sit in a position where no one could stand, under Todd’s protection.
What could’ve possibly happened when a man, who loved Anais so much, now insults her?
Whether it’s a joke or a temporary disturbance, you’ve gone too far.
Above all, Logan was already worried about how he was going to handle the aftermath of the situation.
Even though you were in a coma for a month, it may be hard to see Anais after messing with her.
“Please mind your words.”
Logan, however, was an associate for eight years and knew how to deal with such trouble.
If you work under Duke Sunday, you will be able to cover up your superior’s mess with skill.
He refrained from cursing at Todd and decided that Anais should be reassured first before anything else.
“This is Lady Anais. I think you’re confused because it hasn’t been long since you came to your senses.”
“Is she a maid? That’s the only thing I can think of as I look at her….”
Todd muttered, looking at Anais’ face with his heavy eyes, which had been closed for a month.
Logan’s efforts of trying to ease the trouble Todd had caused went down the drain.
Not changing the subject, Logan still pushed for Todd to admit that Anais is his beloved.
Because of that, the atmosphere has become irrevocably chilly.
‘’Stupid mouth of mine.’
Logan recalled that whenever Todd sees Anais, his ears turn red.
In addition, he kept on nagging his aides about the things his mother told him about pregnancy.
“The early stages of pregnancy are dangerous, so you should be careful. Make sure to buy and do these things with caution, and send someone to help her move. No, I’ll just go instead.”
“My Lord, where are you running off to when you have work piled up!”
Anais, who had been diagnosed, was calm. But you, have you forgotten the time when you created such havoc?
Logan held his anger back with a snort.
“Oliver! Tell him in detail why the housekeeper is doing this.”
Oliver, Duke Sunday’s full-time physician, had to follow all his orders.
For a moment, the atmosphere seemed to be strange.
From how Logan looks at her, she must be the Duke’s fiancee.
Oliver swallowed his saliva with tension and asked Todd carefully.
“My Lord. Do you perhaps know who I am?”
“What are you trying to do?”
“Do you know what my job is?”
“…….”
Todd, who was annoyed because Oliver has been ranting since this morning, saw that all eyes were focused on him, making him keep his mouth shut for a moment.
When I opened my eyes, I was told that I was in a coma for a month. My body was stiff and my head hurt like crazy.
But throughout the time the insolent Logan was here, he was cursing at me with his eyes. He even brought an unfamiliar woman here, who was glued to me the whole time with a pale face.
Hearing the desperation in her voice made me feel an unknown emotion that gave me goosebumps in my arm.
After all that, it should be time to send out this woman and that cocky deputy out of my sight.
Todd felt water dripping over the back of his hand, which made him turn his head in confusion.
The woman who was frozen earlier was now crying silently.
“Why are you crying all of a sudden….?”
Todd, embarrassed, tried to wipe her tears without thinking twice, but Oliver poked his face, blocking the way.
“My Lord, don’t you remember me?”
It made him angry that the distance between them was so close.
He didn’t understand why he needed to know what his doctor’s breath felt like.
“It won’t end with just a salary cut if you don’t put your face away this instant. You third-rate quack.”
Fortunately, it seemed like he remembered his old doctor.
Oliver, whose face brightened a little, pointed to Anais.
“Then, do you remember who this lady is?”
The eyes of Todd met with Anais’ gray eyes that were filled with tears.
Golden lashes framing her eyes that were shaped like almonds.
She looked incompetent. It’s as though she couldn’t survive without anyone’s help and protection.
Before I felt any more strange emotion, I pulled out my hand that was being held by the woman.
“I don’t know. I’ve never seen her before.”
