Chapter 60: It Won’t Hurt as Long as You Behave
Upon snapping back to reality, Ji Yun averted Yu Shengjie’s gaze in a panic and turned to look at Ji Xiaonian. In a breathless voice, she asked, “What did you just say? X-Xiaonian, th-this man… He’s…”
Ji Xiaonian was certain that Ji Yun was referring to Yu Shengjie. As such, she hurriedly introduced him, “His surname is Yu, and his name is Shengjie. He’s my distant cousin.”
‘Yu…’
The mention of that surname had caused a second big bang to occur in Ji Yun’s universe.
She dropped her gaze onto Yu Shengjie once more, and she asked, transfixed, “Are you from Australia?”
Yu Shengjie was still clueless as to why this so-called ‘Aunty’ of Xiaonian’s was giving him such a bizarre look. However, when she heard her question, he nodded and answered, “Yes.”
Ji Yun’s face blanched even further, and her eyes darted away in terror once more.
She then looked towards Ji Xiaonian and pulled at her, asking, “Xiaonian, Aunty doesn’t feel so well all of a sudden. Could you bring Aunty upstairs to rest?”
“Ah? Aunty, are you alright?” Just as Ji Yun had stated, she was indeed looking unwell. Upon noticing this, Ji Xiaonian hurriedly put down the items in her hand and rushed to assist her.
“Let’s go, please support Aunty as we head up.” Ji Yun rose to her feet, and without sparing a glance at Yu Shengjie, she left.
Ji Xiaonian did not understand why Aunty Bai was reacting so adversely to Yu Shengjie. However, she did not speak a word about it, and instead, she motioned for Yu Shengjie to wait for her as she assisted Aunty to head upstairs.
By an awful stroke of coincidence, just as Ji Xiaonian and Ji Yun were halfway up the stairs, they encountered Bai Yan who was making his way down.
The moment she saw Bai Yan, Ji Xiaonian immediately halted. With a reddened face, she whispered to Ji Yun, “Aunty, didn’t you say that he wasn’t at home?”
‘That man’s actually at home.’
‘I let him see me in his own house!’
‘Doesn’t that prove to him that I can’t keep my word?’
‘No. I wasn’t aware that he was at home. I didn’t meet him on purpose.’
‘I need to leave, fast.’
“Huh? When did you return, Lil Bai? Why wasn’t I aware of it?” Ji Yun feigned ignorance.
Bai Yan took a glance at Ji Xiaonian but seeing as she was unwilling to look at him, his originally happy mood had instantly turned sour.
Before he even spoke a word, the little girl hurriedly stated, “Aunty, since your son’s at home, then I think it’s better to have him accompany you. I have something else to do, so I’ll be leaving now.”
She did not spare a single glance at Bai Yan. Once she finished talking to Aunty, she immediately turned around and left.
The moment she reached the living room, she grabbed Yu Shengjie’s arm and exclaimed, “Let’s leave, Sister Shengjie!”
Without waiting for Yu Shengjie to respond, she had already dragged him out of the Bai Family’s villa.
“Xiaonian…”
Ji Yun called out to her, but that little girl was already long gone.
She looked at her son with a worried expression. “Lil Bai, what’s the meaning of this? Why did Xiaonian run away the moment she saw you?”
Bai Yan’s face was devoid of any emotion, but in truth, his emotions were the lowest that they had ever been. While he continued walking down, he answered, “I’m aware of that.”
Ji Yun turned around and followed Bai Yan. “Why wouldn’t you be aware of it? Are you bullying her again? I’m certain about it, there was not a single instance where Ji Xiaonian had not addressed you as Brother Yan in the past, but she’s changed now. She no longer calls you brother, and instead refers to you by your real name.”
“Lil Bai, did you hurt her with your words again?”
Bai Yan slouched lazily on the sofa, and with his legs raised and his expression sunken, he sourly answered, “Didn’t you notice? She already has someone else by her side. Why does she need me anymore?”
Ji Yun sat beside him and commented, “What did you just say? Xiaonian has someone else now? Are you talking about that man from before?”
Bai Yan lowered his head and took a sip of tea. He felt as if there was a heavy object placed on top of his chest, and it was crushing him.
“That’s impossible. Xiaonian said that the man is her long-distance relative. There’s no way that anything will happen between them. Plus…”
“I have something to do. I’m heading out.”
As he had gotten tired of his mother’s endless nagging, Bai Yan rose to his feet and left the house.
“Hey, Lil Bai! Lil Bai…”
No matter how his mother had called out to him, Bai Yan did not look back. Instead, he opened the gates of the villa and vanished out of the sight.
…
Not long after she had dragged Yu Shengjie away from the Bai Residence, Ji Xiaonian suddenly felt something off about her body.
She was holding her stomach as if in pain, and she was squatting by the roadside.
Seeing that there was something wrong with her, Yu Shengjie hurriedly rushed to her side and asked, “What’s wrong, Niannian? Are you feeling uncomfortable?”
While holding onto her aching stomach, Ji Xiaonian nodded and answered, “Yes. I think that today’s ‘that’ day. Plus, I even drank the cold beverages you prepared earlier, so, my stomach is currently hurting like crazy.”
It had always been like this. Whenever she took anything cold before her menstruation, her little belly would ache, and she would feel no strength in any of her limbs. Her vision would also start to grow foggy, and she would feel as if her soul was leaving her.
Seeing how serious her condition was, Yu Shengjie hurriedly ran up to carry her. “I’ll carry you home. Try to endure it.”
However, just as he was about to lift Ji Xiaonian, he was suddenly pushed back by a powerful force. Unable to react to the sudden event, Yu Shengjie was instantly tossed aside.
In the next second, the man that Ji Xiaonian had wanted to see the most, and at the same time, was the one she had no courage to see, appeared before her. He was the man that she had clearly stated that she hated, and yet, he was also the man that filled her thoughts every night.
She stared at the man in dumbfounded shock.
Bai Yan furrowed her brows, and squatted beside her, asking, “Are you eating randomly again? Don’t you know your own cycle? Sigh, why do you always eat random food during this particular period of your cycle?”
The man took large strides towards the Ji Residence while carrying the girl.
Yu Shengjie, who had been left behind, spaced out for a moment before giving chase to the two.
On the other hand, Ji Xiaonian who was tucked within Bai Yan’s embrace was stunned silly.
‘Do-Doesn’t he hate me? Wasn’t I the person he hated the most?’
‘So, why’s he here all of a sudden?’
Even though the agony that tormented her stomach had rendered her weak, the little girl refused to let go of her pride. She thrashed and beat at Bai Yan’s chest, and while she struggled, she shouted, “What are you doing? Let me go! Let me go! I don’t want you to carry me, let me go!”
‘This b*stard always acts so unexpectedly.’
‘When he’s feeling good, he’ll carry me, and when he’s not, he’ll tell me to vanish from his sight.’
She was a woman of her words, and she had already resolved to never appear before him again. However, what was she supposed to do, now that he had appeared before her?
To Bai Yan, Ji Xiaonian’s clobbering was no different from flea bites. He lowered his eyes to look at her, and when he saw how pale and sickly she looked, he frustratedly spat, “Quiet down, unless you want to experience pain.”
He was aware of how agonizing her menstruation was.
Especially when she took anything cold. When that happened, she would hurt so much that she would shave off half of her lifespan.
it was the fifteenth day of the month at that point in time, which coincidentally, was the date of Ji Xiaonian’s menstruation. Had he not taken a stroll outside, Bai Yan would have forgotten all about her most torturous days of the month!
“I’d rather die than have you worry about me.”
Ji Xiaonian clenched her teeth, and with her pride still burning brightly within her heart, she stubbornly retorted him.
“Ji Chen would never forgive me if you were to truly die. So, you had better behave if you don’t want it to hurt, okay?” Understanding how much pain that Ji Xiaonian was going through, Bai Yan decided not to put on airs with her, and instead, had used a much gentler tone than usual.
