Chapter 31: Close Combat
Ralph looked at the soldiers chasing after them.
“Fine. That’s the only way.”
The two of them had fought before, but in order to win this competition, they still teamed up and climbed down together.
In the process of climbing down, Wright held onto the wooden stake from the top. Immediately after, Ralph followed this wooden stake and grabbed Wright’s foot to reach the next wooden stake.
Then Ralph secured himself on the next stake. Wright went down, grabbed Ralph’s foot, and reached the next stake.
This cycle continued.
After a minute, they had almost reached the finish line.
At that moment, Ralph’s eyes flickered the moment he grabbed Wright’s foot. He suddenly jumped down and reached the finish line ahead of time.
Wright was still a wooden stake away from reaching the ground. Because of this, he did not climb down in time. He said furiously.
“You betrayed your teammate. I despise you.”
So he gave Ralph the middle finger.
Ralph said disdainfully.
“All is fair in war. Learn from it.”
Ralph won first place in the race to cross the obstacle line.
However, Wright’s face turned red with anger.
Because of this, Wright and Ralph’s hatred grew deeper and deeper.
After returning to the tactical training camp and resting for a day, the soldiers began to prepare for the third segment of the competition.
The third segment was close combat.
This segment required every soldier to take off their clothes and be prohibited from carrying any metal objects. They would fight one-on-one within a circular area. They would be paired up and the winner of each round would proceed to the next round. They would be eliminated if they fell and did not get up after 10 seconds or if they exceeded the red line which marked the boundary of the fighting area.
The next day, the competition started.
In the midst of the hubbub, Wright and Ralph were particularly calm. Their eyes seemed to be filled with confidence.
There were a total of 20 people participating in this melee battle. There were ten groups, and each group had two people.
The first group consisted of two short soldiers.
One of the soldiers looked powerful and powerful, while the other looked very vigorous.
The two of them were a meter apart. As they looked at each other, an unstoppable aura gathered.
One of them, an agile soldier, rushed towards the other soldier. After getting close, he did not attack directly. Instead, he pretended to attack, allowing the other party to attack first.
As expected, the other party swung his fist over.
Twenty minutes later, the third match was completed.
In the fourth group, Ralph took the field. He was facing a tall soldier named Francis.
Francis had won first place twice in previous close combat competitions, and he rarely made mistakes in fights. His performance had always been excellent.
However, Ralph did not feel any pressure when facing Francis. He did not think of Francis as a threat.
“Beep beep!”
The instructor’s whistle blew. The match began.
Ralph stood motionless. Francis shot a glance at him and quickly rushed forward.
He waved his hand and wanted to slap Ralph’s face, but Ralph blocked him with his elbow. Then Ralph quickly kicked Francis in the stomach.
“Ah…”
Francis yelled.
The kick that landed on his body had clearly caused a lot of damage.
Ralph was also known as the Poison Wolf in the tactical training camp. His movements were fast, accurate, and ruthless.
Francis certainly wasn’t going to take that kick for nothing. After he suffered the kick, he turned and hit Ralph in the back with his elbow.
The two of them exchanged several blows.
In close combat, Ralph and Francis were similar in strength.
Hence, the two of them fought for more than ten minutes.
However, when Francis was about to give Ralph a heavy blow, Ralph saw the move coming and reacted in time. Not only did the heavy blow not hit Ralph, but Ralph even used the opportunity to give Francis a heavy kick.
This heavy kick determined the outcome of this battle.
Francis was kicked in the stomach again.
Ralph of the fourth group won and was allowed to enter the next round.
After that, three more matches were held.
…
The seventh group was Wright and William.
The whistle blew and the match began.
Wright and William placed their hands on each other’s shoulders and pulled at each other.
In order to quickly knock him to the ground, Wright used his head to slam into William’s face.
There were some bruises on William’s face.
William’s face turned pale as he glared at Wright with a murderous look.
Although this was a friendly competition, William was still very hot-tempered. Every move he made was vicious.
Thus, Wright did not face William head-on. If he was slightly careless, he would easily suffer fatal damage.
Fortunately, Wright’s combat techniques were more skilled now, and he nimbly dodged William’s attacks.
Of course, constantly dodging in battle was not Wright’s style.
When William tried to punch him, Wright grabbed William’s hand in time and placed it behind his shoulder. He did a shoulder throw and threw William to the ground.
However, William did not stay on the ground. He quickly stood up and kicked Wright in the chest.
Wright saw the kick coming and hurriedly used the position of his elbow to strike William’s calf. In an instant, William’s leg was hit and he was now trembling from the pain. William was obviously unable to stand steadily.
“A good chance. Now!”
Wright yelled.
Then, he raised his leg and kicked William’s chest.
William fell to the ground.
The instructor started counting down to ten seconds. As he counted, William felt indignant and wanted to stand up.
However, because of the two heavy blows to his chest and leg, he was already trembling. In the end, he still did not stand up.
In the seventh group, Wright was declared the winner.
Next, the matches of the eighth group, ninth group, and tenth group were carried out. In the six hours of competition, the ten groups had now been narrowed down to five.
There were a total of ten people in five groups who advanced to the next round.
The second round was a little different from the first round. The rule was that the opponent must be eliminated within a minute. If the opponent was not eliminated, both parties would proceed to the next round of the competition and match up with each other again until the winner was decided within a minute.
Each soldier was given a single-digit number called the sequence number. The people with odd numbers stood in a row. The people with even numbers stood in another row.
They lined up in two rows and the people in the two rows were paired up.
Incidentally, Wright and Ralph were paired in the same group.
