Rebirth on the Doors to the Civil Affairs Bureau - Chapter 30
Chapter 30 The Happiness from Being Ill
***
Xia Feng set the car heater a little higher. The tired Yu Dong was next to him at the passenger seat, sleeping.
It was an hour of travel from the radio station to the hospital, and with the dangerous roads, the drive took even longer.
Yu Dong had been very tired and was tossing around as she slept.
Taking advantage of a red light, Xia Feng took his own jacket off and draped it over Yu Dong.
Yu Dong shuffled a bit before turning towards Xia Feng. Seeing her flushed face, Xia Feng couldn’t help but show a gentle smile.
Traffic during the morning peak was heavy, but the atmosphere inside the car was quiet and happy.
Amongst the millions of people in this world, only you can make me happy.
Xia Feng suddenly understood this sentence.
The car slowly drove downtown, back to their suburb. Although he was reluctant to wake Yu Dong, Xia Feng thought that it would be too uncomfortable to continue sleeping in the car.
“Yu Dong!” Xia Feng softly called out.
Yu Dong didn’t stir, she just went on sleeping.
“Yu Dong, wake up, we’re home.” Xia Feng gently patted her shoulder.
“Hn?” Yu Dong opened her bleary eyes and looked towards Xia Feng, before closing them again. “I’m so sleepy….”
“Get up and you can go back to sleep on your bed.” Xia Feng chuckled at Yu Dong’s response.
“Hnnn~” Yu Dong’s voice was heavy with sleep “I’m sleepy!”
Seeing that she had no intention of getting up, Xia Feng shook his head and leaned over to unbuckle Yu Dong’s seat belt. He then got out of the car, intending to carry her upstairs.
Afraid that she would get cold, Xia Feng tightly wrapped his jacket around Yu Dong then hooked an arm through her legs, with the other arm going around her waist, gently bringing the person into his arms.
Yu Dong stayed asleep, but she unconsciously buried her face against Xia Feng’s neck.
Xia Feng was caught off-guard and immediately stiffened at the hot skin pressed against his. He put Yu Dong back into the passenger seat and placed a hand at her forehead.
It was obviously far from a person’s average temperature, Yu Dong has a fever!
Damn it!
Xia Feng buckled her seat belt, got on the car and quickly drove to the city hospital.
Once at the hospital, Xia Feng went directly into the emergency ward with Yu Dong in his arms.
“Dr. Xia? What’s wrong?” Head nurse Liu worriedly asked when she saw Xia Feng running in with a person in his arms.
“Nurse Liu, please help me find a bed.” Xia Feng was very anxious.
“Oh, of course!” Nurse Liu beckoned towards a nurse, and soon the small nurse pushed a bed over. She then helped Xia Feng push Yu Dong towards the appropriate ward.
Not long after, Dr. Li Ruimin, a general practitioner, hurried over.
“Director Li.” Xia Feng looked over worriedly.
“Don’t panic, let me take a look first.” Director Li reassured.
After a series of checks, Director Li prescribed Yu Dong the necessary medicine and finally let a nurse give her an IV drip.
Director Li wrote up the prescription and handed it to a nurse on duty. Finally, he glanced at Xia Feng and smiled: “Who’s this girl?”
“Eh?” Too worried about Yu Dong, he ended up answering honestly, “My wife.”
“You’re married, son?” Director Li was surprised, Xia Feng was called their hospital’s Golden Bachelor. How many little nurses pined after him, how come nobody knew he was married, ah?
The head nurse nearby was also shocked. It seems that she’ll be hearing nurses crying in the next few days.
“Yes, we just got the certificate, we haven’t had the wedding yet.” Xia Feng said.
“That better be true, you haven’t even invited us to go out for drinks.” Director Li gave him a look.
“I will surely invite venerable senior, I’ve always appreciated your help.” Xia Feng laughs.
“That’s for sure!” Director Li teased. “No wonder an ordinary cold made you so nervous; when the nurse called me over, I thought someone had a major illness.”
“Ah….excuse me, venerable senior.” Xia Feng naturally knew what Director Li meant. There weren’t any significant problems with Yu Dong.
“She’s alright, she just had a stressful day. No problems, the fever was just because of the cold weather and recent fatigue. Let her rest, and when she wakes up, she’ll be good as new. I’ll prescribe some medicine, just take it home.” Director Li said.
“Okay, thank you, Director Li.”
Xia Feng sat near Yu Dong’s bed for a while after. Seeing her sleep soundly, he reached out to straighten her mussed hair, then covered her properly with the quilt before getting up.
“Nurse Liu please look after her for me.” Xia Feng approached the head nurse’s desk and asked.
“We take good care of the family members of our hospital, you can be rest assured.” Nurse Liu said.
“Please call me when she wakes up.” Xia Feng added one last request.
“Don’t you worry!” Nurse Liu laughed.
Xia Feng felt a little embarrassed as he thanked her before heading to the surgery ward.
“Sister Liu, that patient just now was Dr. Xia’s girlfriend?” A little nurse approached, wanting to gossip.
“Not a girlfriend.” Nurse Liu shook her head.
“That’s a relief, a lot of people asked me just now if Dr. Xia’s girlfriend appeared. We’ve been nervous all day.” The little nurse brought a hand up to her chest with a reassured expression.
“I say, you all daydream about Dr. Xia all day long. It’s not like the man himself can fall for you that way.”
“Sister Liu, you don’t understand. Handsome guys belong to everybody, as long as we’re not married, we can all YY.”
(T/N: YY is slang for fantasizing, or to have sexual thoughts)
“Then you can rest now, ” Nurse Liu pointed towards the ward and said, “That beauty isn’t Dr. Xia’s girlfriend, but his wife.”
“What?” The little nurse howled, suddenly her whole body received a jolt. She turned to the other nurses and had a crazy discussion with them before the entire group descended to chaos and crying.
Why are good men getting married so early?
In the surgical office.
Shao Yifan was watching the news. When he saw Xia Feng come in, his eyes suddenly brightened. He ushered his friend in and said, “Xia Feng, Xia Feng, Yu Dong is in the news.”
“What news?” Xia Feng wondered.
“Look, look…”Shao Yifan pulled Xia Feng to a computer and opened a website.
The news described the car accident last night, focusing on the fleet of taxi drivers spontaneously arriving to rescue the injured.
“The news asked some listeners to explain what happened, they found that the taxi drivers heard Yu Dong last night in the radio, leading to them to the spontaneous rescue which saved many people.” Shao Yifan said excitedly. “Look at the photo, there are so many taxis in front of the hospital, last night must’ve been such a spectacular sight.”
“It was unfortunate that I had the night shift yesterday; otherwise I could’ve heard Yu Dong’s broadcast.” Shao Yifan’s expression was full of regret.
After reading the article, Xia Feng went to his seat to put on his white coat.
Shao Yifan realized something and asked Xia Feng: “Why’d you only wear a shirt to work, where’s your jacket?”
“In the ward.” Xia Feng recalled.
“Ward? Did you go check out the wards first?” Shao Yifan looked at him strangely.
“Yu Dong had a fever, so I sent her over and left my jacket there.” Xia Feng explained.
“My idol has a fever? “Shao Yifan was surprised.
“Your idol?” Xia Feng gave a sidelong glance towards Shao Yifan.
“Yeah, from now on, Yu Dong is my idol.” Shao Yifan said this to Xia Feng with a beaming smile.
“You sure look so happy!” Xia Feng couldn’t be bothered with him anymore, so he took his stethoscope and was about to go around and check the wards.
Yu Dong slept deeply, and it was 6:00 p.m. when she eventually woke up.
She had slept for an hour.
Looking around in a daze, Yu Dong realized she was in a hospital after a long moment. She turned her head and saw a black coat draped across a chair beside her bed. She recognized it as Xia Feng’s.
How did I end up in a hospital?
“You’re awake?” Nurse Liu noticed that Yu Dong had woken up and came in to check her vitals. “You aren’t warm anymore, so I think your fever’s gone, but let me take your temperature to be sure.”
“What about Xia Feng?” Yu Dong asked.
Hearing her parched voice, the head nurse poured Yu Dong a glass of water.
“Thank you!” Yu Dong nodded in thanks as she took the offered cup.
“Dr. Xia passed by several times, and when he saw that you were still asleep, he went off again.” Nurse Liu said, “Don’t blame him, doctors are always so busy.”
“I know.” Yu Dong smiled.
“Look at you, such a good and understanding girl, no wonder Dr. Xia was very protective of you.” Nurse Liu smiled.
“Eh?”
“I was so startled when he rushed in this morning. Even our Director was shocked and ended up checking you over. You only had a common cold so Dr. Xia ended up being embarrassed.” Nurse Liu couldn’t help but chuckle at the memory.
“Really?” Yu Dong was a little surprised.
When she saw Yu Dong’s expression the head nurse thought that she didn’t believe her, so she continued to talk: “Of course it’s true, the doctors here all help lives and heal the injured. Just because they don’t spend enough time with their families doesn’t mean that they don’t care about them, ah.”
“Ah?” Yu Dong didn’t know why Nurse Liu said all that, she was puzzled.
“You mustn’t misunderstand Dr. Xia, he was really worried about you!”
“Oh! I know, thank you!” Yu Dong finally figured out what the head nurse was trying to do, such a funny misunderstanding.
“Then I’ll go call Dr. Xia for you.”
“No, no it’s fine, he must be pretty busy right now.” Yu Dong refused.
“That’s no good, Dr. Xia instructed me several times that I have to inform him the moment you wake up.” The head nurse looked at Yu Dong’s thermometer. “Your temperature is normal, just take some medicine when you go home.”
Yu Dong nodded, and Nurse Liu headed out.
Yu Dong grabbed her phone and saw there were several missed calls from her radio station and from Xiaoyue. After thinking for a but, Yu Dong sat up, dressed and went out to the hospital’s garden to call back. She was worried calling at the stairs would mess with the hospital’s equipment.
“Director Ma, I’m terribly sorry, my phone was on silent, I didn’t notice your call.” Yu Dong returned the call of the radio station director first.
“Well, that’s alright.”
“What can I do for you?’
“Oh, it’s not a big deal, our big boss from Taiwan just wanted to praise you for your good deeds.” Director Ma said.
“The big boss is too polite.” Yu Dong didn’t need to think far to realize this was because of last night.
“We need to congratulate you, so come by the station tomorrow afternoon.” Director Ma said.
“OK!”
Yu Dong then hung up the phone and called Xiang Xiaoyue.
“Xiaoyue, how’s the studio dubbing? ” Yu Dong asked.
“Xinxin and I finished, so you don’t need to worry.” Xiaoyue replied, “What have you been doing all day? Why haven’t you been answering the phone?”
“I had a fever and was sent to the hospital.”
“What? Are you OK now? I’ll come by and visit you.” Xiaoyue exclaimed.
“No need, Xia Feng’s here.”
“Alright then!” Xiang Xiaoyue said, “I’m not so tactless that I’d go disturb a pair of lovebirds.”
Yu Dong smiled as she ended the call.
When she came back into the ward, Xia Feng was already inside. When he saw Yu Dong coming back, he frowned and scolded, “You just got better, why are you running around already.”
He went towards her and took Yu Dong’s hand, startling: “Why is your hand so cold?”
“I just went out to make a phone call.” Yu Dong explained.
“Is this how a sick person should act.” Xia Feng disagreed.
“It’s my bad!” Yu Dong knew that Xia Feng was very concerned about her well-being and suddenly felt a little guilty.
“You…” Xia Feng couldn’t say anything after that.
“Ha ha…” Seeing that Xia Feng wasn’t really angry with her, she giggled.
“Hungry?” Xia Feng knew that Yu Dong must be starving, she hadn’t eaten the whole day.
“Un!” Yu Dong nodded.
“Let’s go then!” Xia Feng helped Yu Dong zip up her jacket, then held her hand as they went out of the ward.
Several nurses peeked at them along the way, but Xia Feng never released Yu Dong’s hand.
This hand seems to be magical, Yu Dong thought, even if the road ahead becomes full of thorns, as long as he holds my hand, I’d follow him anywhere.
“I’ve missed you!”
Xia Feng froze, then slowly started to laugh happily, petting Yu Dong’s head indulgently:
“Dummy!”
……
Shao Yifan, who was 5 meters behind them, couldn’t help but cry out: “Fuck, if you weren’t my brother I’d have jumped in between you lovebirds already!”

Poor Shao Yifan.
P.S someone mentioned some misspelled words and some punctuation errors, so I’ll be going back through previous chapters to edit them when I can. Thank you for pointing them out! I’ll admit I stopped going through the chapters when I found the promise of 1 chapter a day to be a lot harder than I previously thought haha. Anyway, just wanted to tell you guys that I’ll be slowly going through previous chapters and that even through editing, my punctuation game might not be on point so sorry about that. I’m the type of person who puts commas instead of periods.
