Seeker of First Light - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
1. Unnamed.
“Move that over there!”
“Yes, thank you for your hard work!”
“Here you go! This side needs a hand too! Here!”
“Coming!”
Sedition, where she was staying, was busy preparing for the event to be held a few days later. Chryselua glanced around at the people wandering around, seeing if there was anything she could do to help.
It was then that a signal came from her chest.
Trrrr.
Trrrrrr.
The magic tool for long-distance communication that she always carried with her cried noisily. Since this magic tool was quite expensive and there was a limit to the number of times it could be used, it did not ring often.
‘Is it important…?’
She went to a quiet place and received the call.
[ Chrys. Are you there? ]
‘Gasp! This voice…!’
Even though she was startled and almost dropped the tool, Chryselua caught it with both hands. Even though no one was watching, she straightened her back and posture.
“…Lord!”
The voice that came over the magic tool was the voice of the Dragon Lord, which she hadn’t heard in a long time. In fact, she knew it without necessarily recognizing it by the voice.
Chryselua, the Twilight Dragon… few people could call her so friendly.
“Wow! Is it really Lord? It’s been a while since you contacted me.”
[ …Yes, it’s been a while. Is it the holiday season there, too? ]
“Yes, as usual, the mission support was finished a few days ago, I finished the research presentation, and now only the final ceremony remains.”
[Ancestral ceremony… I see.]
“Yes, this year, the spirit realm representative will be in charge of the final ceremony.”
Saying that, Chryselua inspected the neatly lined buildings of Sedition. There was not a single blemish in the pure white buildings that made one feel a sense of cleanliness.
Sedition.
It was the place where she was currently staying, and they were like a mediator of all disputes.
In the distant past, it was said that there were endless conflicts between dragons, fairies, and demons. They showed their teeth to each other from time to time, and when they did not compromise at all, the world became a sea of fire.
However, when a new problem threatening the world emerged, the three forces united to solve the problem.
Sedition was established to represent the convention. The three races signed a non-aggression pact centered on Sedition, commemorating the end of the war and, at the same time, beginning to work hard to maintain peace in the world.
Dragons. Fairies. Demons…
The three most blessed races, the most powerful, longest-lived, and wisest on earth. This Sedition was the way they fulfilled their responsibilities as they are born with great power in this land.
And just now, the beginning of autumn.
Sedition at this time would be busy. This period, which was also the founding anniversary of Sedition, was a time when those who entered this place were judged and recognized for their achievements and abilities.
In particular, a few days later was the day of the largest and most important event, the ancestral ceremony.
“Oh, right! Lord, I have been appointed as the representative of the divine realm for this ceremony.”
The sound of the Lord swallowing her breath could be heard over the magic tool. Chryselua smiled brightly in excitement while the Lord couldn’t believe it.
The ancestral ceremony was an important event for those who achieved the highest achievements in Sedition of the year. Usually, those who had been dispatched several times to the most important rift missions were in charge.
And that ‘rift mission’ was not applicable to Chryselua, the Twilight Dragon.
…Chryselua, the Twilight Dragon.
She was a member of the dragon race that rules the divine realm. Dragons had a long lifespan, infinite magic power, and a beautiful appearance. Since ancient times, these dragons had been qualified to rule the divine realm.
However, Chryselua’s case was different. She was a little special ‘Twilight Dragon,’ different from them.
The Twilight Dragon did not have any special abilities that dragons should be born with. Originally, she should have been weeded out because she didn’t have high magic power, and she couldn’t properly handle magic, the specialty of dragons.
Nonetheless, the current Dragon Lord of the divine realm took pity on her and took her, giving her the beautiful name ‘Twilight.’
Since the Dragon Lord treated her as a daughter, no one treated her carelessly. As Chryselua was small and in poor health from birth, she was often seen as little. Because of that, it was a surprise that such a Twilight Dragon, who had stubbornly entered Sedition, achieved something to be proud of.
“I really worked hard this year. I’ve never been on a rift mission, but to be the representative is really unusual…!”
[ I heard the story. ]
“Really?”
Chryselua twirled her own sunset-colored hair with his fingers.
Hearing Lord’s voice made her heart flutter. If she congratulated her on this achievement, she would be able to float for months to come. Perhaps she could even repay what had been upsetting her inside.
[ Chris, are you in touch with Naskan? ]
“…Naskan?”
But, the Lord immediately said the next thing.
Judging from the hint of nervousness in her voice, it seemed that she was in a hurry. Naskan was the name of a childhood friend Chryselua had always been with. She was always close to him when he was young but naturally drifted away after she left the divine realm.
According to the rumors, Naskan had been wandering around, causing trouble in the underworld. He was so famed that the fairies and demons beaten by him tremble even when they hear his name. Even the old dragons of the divine realm would click their tongues, saying that the usually fine man had become strange.
[ I don’t know when he’ll come to his senses. ]
“Ahahaha…”
There was an awkward laugh.
That friend seemed to have been fine when he was young, but now, he was ignoring even contact from the Lord.
Even though she knew it wasn’t, the anticipation that had risen in the corner of her heart subsided…
That the Lord didn’t contact her because she needed her.
It was an obvious fact. Chryselua, the Twilight Dragon’s ability, was so vastly different from those like Naskan that they did not even deserve to be compared. It was the same, no matter how much Naskan was doing crazy things and wandering around.
She had been contacted by the Lord for the first time in a while and told her of the good news, but it was actually about Naskan. She couldn’t help but feel down.
“…Lord, it seems that this is something about Naskan. Is it because of the rifts? I am not very useful.”
Although she tried to speak brightly, her voice was hoarse.
Even though Naskan could lightly ignore the Lord’s calls, strangely, when she contacted him, Naskan would answer them without delay. So, when there was a big matter, she would look for Naskan once or twice, and Chryselua connected the two together. It seemed to be a similar business this time.
The Lord’s voice over the magic tool was cut off for a while. The unusually long silence was suspicious.
“Lord?”
[ …. ]
Although tried calling out, unexpectedly, the silence became longer. However, the Lord’s breathing was a little strange. The sound of her breathing was intermittently mixed with water.
After thinking about whether to ask or not, Chryselua uttered.
“…Lord, are you crying?”
While there was no answer, in this case, the silence was the answer.
Chryselua was greatly flustered.
“No, why are you suddenly like this… Does Naskan upset you so much? It’s a given, but… Oh, don’t worry too much. If I see him, I will scold him and send him to the divine realm. Even if he looks like that, he is good at solving rifts. He even listens to me.”
[ …. ]
The sound of sobbing grew louder, perhaps the comforting was of no avail.
Chryselua reluctantly took out her trump card.
“Come on, mom! Don’t cry.”
Although it tickled her at this age, the Lord used to feel strangely delighted when Chryselua, whom she had raised like a child, said such words.
“Naskan will come to his senses soon! No matter what, he is the heir chosen by mom. He’s going to be Lord soon.”
The wind that blew softly from somewhere scattered Chryselua’s sunset-colored hair. Just as her uneasiness had subsided like her hair, the Lord spoke out.
[ Chris. ]
“Yes! Lord!”
There was no strength in her voice, but it was fortunate that the crying seemed to have disappeared.
[ I have something to give you. ]
“Yes? To me…?”
[ Yes. ]
“Not Naskan, but to me?”
[ Yes. ]
‘…What does she mean?’
No matter how much Naskan was out of his mind and doing crazy things, he would successfully complete the important missions that the Lord entrusted to him. If it were a big matter for the Lord to entrust her with something, it would be equivalent to the rift mission.
Common sense made it impossible for the Twilight Dragon to replace Naskan. At first, she was confused and asked several times though Chryselua quickly understood.
‘So, that’s what Lord meant…’
To give it to Naskan properly.
Chryselua answered the Lord cheerfully.
“Yes, leave it to me!”
