“This is our defense plan. Please take a look at it.” Shannon placed the proposal that she had prepared in front of Mr. Taylor.
However, Mr. Taylor studied her with a puzzled expression. He didn’t understand why Shannon had suddenly caught Max’s eye.
After all, Max had only one woman by his side all these years. It was common knowledge that Janice was Max’s fiancée!
“Mr. Taylor? Aren’t you going to take a look?” Shannon frowned, confused over his expression.
Could he be another Karl?
“There’s no need to look at it. There shouldn’t be a problem if you’re someone President Wenley approves of. Let’s sign the contract.” Mr. Taylor reached his hand out and demanded for the contract.
Shannon was stunned, and she stood rooted to her seat. President Wenley? Was it him?
“Mr. Taylor, may I know who the President Wenley that you mentioned is…?”
“Max Wenley! Are there other President Wenleys in this city? Miss Zanders, don’t tell me you don’t know who he is?” Mr. Taylor had a treacherous smile on his face.
A trace of confusion swept across Shannon’s face. What did he mean by this? Didn’t he see what happened last night?
Why did he help her? Was it because of the baby?
Impossible! He was the one who insisted on the abortion!
“What are you doing, Casey? Where’s the contract?” When Pete saw that she was unresponsive, he came up to her and nudged her.
Shannon and Pete looked at each other. It made her uneasy that Max was involved in this matter, and she didn’t want to sign the contract with LG at all.
“What’s wrong with you? If we don’t sign it, do you know what kind of situation our firm will face?” Pete snatched Shannon’s bag and took out the agreement that was already prepared.
The contract signing proceeded smoothly, but Shannon walked out of Mr. Taylor’s office worriedly.
“What’s wrong with you? What’s your relationship with that President Wenley?” Pete had already observed how she was acting out of character, so when the elevator door closed, his expression turned to that of curiosity.
Shannon lowered her eyes. Pete only knew that someone had been hunting her in New York, but he knew nothing about Max.
“Pete, I don’t want to talk about it. Didn’t you want us to represent LG’s case? Now that we’re their lawyers, let’s go back to the firm to prepare.” Shannon thought for a moment, but eventually, she still didn’t tell Pete about Max.
This was her wound. She didn’t want to have to show others this scar again and again.
The elevator door opened and Shannon quickly walked out.
“Casey, it’s okay if you don’t tell me. It’s just that I want you to be happy, but it’s impossible to be happy when you’re hiding so much in your heart.” Pete followed in her footsteps, looking incredibly agitated.
Shannon stopped in her tracks and turned to look at Pete. There was no one in her heart.
If there was, it was probably because of hatred.
“Pete, I hope you won’t mention his name in front of me in the future! Also, I have nothing to do with him. If you dare mention him to me again, I’ll send you straight back to New York!” Shannon’s tone was cold, and her hands started to tremble again at the mention of Max.
Seeing her like this, Pete immediately felt guilty. He seemed to have overstepped his boundaries.
“I’m sorry. I won’t ask again. We—”
Before Pete finished speaking, Shannon’s phone rang. She saw the name on the phone and her mood instantly brightened.
“What’s up, Matthew?” Shannon picked up her phone. The hatred in her eyes had finally dissipated.
Matthew asked where she was, explaining that he wanted to bring her somewhere.
Shannon asked Pete to return to the company, while she went to meet Matthew.
“Where are you taking me to?” Matthew picked Shannon up and drove towards an unfamiliar road. She suddenly felt suspicious.
He didn’t answer her, and simply told her to close her eyes and rest, assuring her that they’d be arriving soon.
“Let’s go.” Half an hour later, Matthew stopped the car and considerately opened the door for Shannon.
She got out of the car and realized that he had actually brought her to a psychiatrist.
“I’m fine, I don’t need to come here. It’s been so long since we last met, let me treat you to a meal.” Shannon’s first reaction was to reject him.
She opened the car door and was about to get back in when Matthew grabbed her hand and stopped her.
“Shannon, you’re not doing well at all. You don’t have to lie to me! You went out so late last night to buy sleeping pills. If your insomnia wasn’t persistent, you wouldn’t have gone to the pharmacist.” Matthew pulled Shannon inside.
Shannon gently pushed Matthew’s hand away, as hesitation surfaced in her eyes.
She didn’t want her friends to know that she wasn’t doing well, especially Matthew.
“Stop putting on a strong front. I already knew last night that something was wrong with you. I’m even more certain after seeing your pallor today. Shannon, you need treatment.” Matthew looked serious.
Of course, Shannon knew that she needed treatment. She had been receiving treatment in New York, but it didn’t seem to be of any use.
“I’ve always had a therapist, but the barriers in my heart aren’t something that can be removed at once, so…”
“Trust me, she’s my friend. Even if you can’t get rid of those barriers, you can at least relax a little.” Matthew insisted.
Shannon thought that no one would be able to tell that she was putting on a brave front if she didn’t say anything. Unexpectedly, Matthew noticed her abnormality at a glance.
“Alright, I’ll go.” She finally made up her mind and walked inside.
The doctor was very gentle and she felt relaxed the moment she entered the consultation room.
“Are you willing to tell me about your situation?” Shannon lay on the massage chair, and the doctor’s tone was as comforting as the wind in spring.
However, she shook her head. She really didn’t want to say or think about it.
“It’s alright, just relax. Close your eyes and we can have a casual chat. I heard that Miss Zanders likes to plant flowers other than working within the law. I’ve planted many tulips at home and brought you a few pots.” The doctor created a relaxed atmosphere.
As Shannon spoke, she fell asleep on the massage chair. The doctor closed the door and walked out.
“She’s too tired. Now that she’s asleep, we can let her sleep a little longer. My experience tells me that she must have experienced a lot of misfortunes. As her friend, you have to talk to her more.” The doctor went out to explain to Matthew about Shannon’s condition.
The two of them chatted outside while Shannon slept in the doctor’s office.
She had never slept so deeply in the past three years.
When she woke up, it was already night time and she was awakened by her hunger.
“Let’s go, I’ll bring you out for a meal.” Shannon had just sat up when she heard Matthew’s warm words ringing in her ears.
She looked out of the window and found it hard to believe that she had slept for so long.
“Did you hear my stomach growling?” Shannon smiled bashfully.
The two of them walked out together. Her mood was much better now that she had enough sleep.
“Thank you for bringing me to the clinic today. I haven’t had a good sleep in a long time.” Shannon hadn’t felt so relaxed in a long time.
The restaurant Matthew brought her to suited her taste, but Shannon remained silent.
Her mind was filled with Mr. Taylor’s words. Now that she thought about it, perhaps he was in Mr. Taylor’s room when she was shouting outside the latter’s door.
This meant that LG and Wenley Corporation had always been partners.. If so, why did he help her?
