Chapter 23: Stay Out of My Business

“Shannon, you…” Matthew hesitated.
“I know you treat me well, and I’m extremely grateful for that but I still have something on. You don’t have to send me off.” Shannon bade goodbye to Matthew after dinner.
He had always cared for her meticulously. She wasn’t foolish; of course she knew his intentions towards her, but she couldn’t give him hope.
She went out, hailed a cab, and headed towards the law firm. No matter what Max’s reason for recommending her was, she had to help LG win the case.
Shannon stayed in the firm and focused on researching her defense. She had a habit of staying in the office before the court sessions began.
However, because of Max’s intervention in this matter, she couldn’t focus at all.
She had been under so much duress even when she moved to New York. Now, if she still had any ties with Max, Janice would definitely not let her off.
When Shannon thought of this, a trace of frustration appeared in her beautiful eyes. She couldn’t continue on like this.
She picked up her handbag and left the firm. Anyway, it wasn’t as though they hadn’t met already. She had to draw the line with him.
However, when Shannon reached the lobby of Wenley Corporation, she suddenly stopped in her tracks, wanting to retreat.
“Hello, Miss Yard. President Wenley is busy. Why don’t you give him a call? I…”
“I’m Max’s fiancée. Everyone knows that! You should just let me in directly.” Janice interrupted the receptionist, her beautiful eyes revealing a trace of frustration.
Because Max didn’t allow her to come to the company, she was like an invisible person. This irritated her.
However, she couldn’t remain stagnant. It had already been three years. She had to show herself in public, and only then would Max marry her.
It had already been a few days, but there was no news from New York. She was afraid that Shannon would suddenly return. If that happened, it would be even harder for her to become Max’s wife.
Janice knew that she couldn’t wait any longer. However, when she walked in further, she saw a familiar face.
She stopped in her tracks. For a moment, she thought she was hallucinating.
“Shannon?” Janice couldn’t help but call out.
Shannon was still hesitating when she heard someone calling her from behind. She immediately turned around, but the person in front of her made her frown with hatred.
“Miss Yard, I guess that you must be very disappointed to see me? I’m back, and I’m perfectly fine.” Shannon didn’t avoid Janice, and directly walked up to her instead. Her eyes were extremely cold.
Janice took a step back. She didn’t expect Shannon to be back, and that they would even meet at Wenley Corporation.
“You must be joking, Miss Zanders. What’s there to be disappointed about? You’re just President Wenley’s ex-wife, a presence that few people know of. I have no reason to be disappointed.” Janice revealed a polite smile after a pause, her every word mocking Shannon.
Shannon suddenly sneered and looked at Janice as if she was a joke.
“I’m afraid that’s not the case. If President Wenley had always treated you as his one and only, you wouldn’t have tried to kill me time and time again. I can let those attempts in the past go, but if you ever try to harm me again in the future, I won’t let you do as you please.” Shannon’s tone was icy and her gaze was sharp.
This was very different from the woman who had begged for mercy on the ground three years ago. Janice suddenly felt a trace of panic in her heart.
“Sir.” The elevator belonging to Max suddenly opened, and his subordinates immediately greeted Max as he walked out of the elevator.
Shannon? He immediately spotted that familiar figure. And was that Janice beside her?
“What are the two of you doing here?” A cold voice sounded beside Shannon and Janice.
Instantly, Janice’s arrogant and mocking expression towards Shannon turned extremely gentle, and she hurriedly squeezed out a pure and beautiful smile at Max.
Shannon smirked. This woman was still as good at putting on an act as she had been a few years ago.
“I’m here to look for you. What I want to say to you is that we’re already unrelated, so my matters naturally have nothing to do with you. I hope that you won’t meddle in my affairs anymore.” When Shannon saw Max, she said what was in her mind, without any hesitation.
Max frowned instantly. He was kind enough to help her, but she rejected his aid so quickly.
“Do you think that without my help, LG would want a law firm without any experience to represent them in a lawsuit?” Max walked towards Shannon, his eyes seemingly covered in frost.
Shannon’s hands trembled uncontrollably. It had been three years, and this was the first time she was standing in such close proximity to him.
She gripped the corner of her shirt tightly and looked up to meet Max’s eyes.
“Mr. Wenley, whether that company hires me or not has nothing to do with you. I’m here to tell you to stay away from me. I’ve already lost what’s most important to me. I don’t want to lose my life because of you!” Shannon mustered up her courage and used what she thought was her most calm and distant tone to express her stance to Max.
Max stared at the woman in front of him. Losing her life? Who wanted to harm her?
“Miss Yard, you can rest assured. Just watch over your own man. Although I’m not from an aristocratic family, I will never go back to my ex. I hope we can both mind our own business in the future.” Shannon turned around and deliberately spoke to Janice, who was beside Max.
She knew that Janice must know what she meant. As expected, Janice’s face changed after hearing what she said.
Shannon ignored Janice’s expression and walked out of the Wenley Corporation quickly.
She ran out and stood by the pavement, but even then, she found it difficult to breathe, and her body was also trembling uncontrollably.
She had been married to him for three years, and she had never been here before. All she did was be a good wife to him who stayed at home.
Yet, all she received in return was a divorce. How strong did she have to be in order to make herself look like nothing had happened?
She looked at Max and Janice, who were still inside the Wenley Corporation building. Her eyes turned misty and her vision blurred.
“Max, I was passing by, and wanted to pass you a tie that I bought for you. I didn’t expect to meet her here.” Janice’s first instinct was to explain to Max.
He gave Janice an icy glance, then held her hand and walked out.
“Max, don’t you think that there should be some changes in our relationship?” Janice couldn’t help but ask Max.
The best years in a woman’s youth were limited. She really couldn’t afford to waste it.
Max continued walking forward without looking at Janice.
The Maybach was waiting for him at the entrance and he brought Janice over to the car.
“Changes? What type of changes do you want? Aren’t we doing well now?” Max didn’t answer Janice until they were in the car.
Janice immediately frowned. Doing well? Was this considered doing well?
“Max, you’ve been divorced for three years, and we’ve also been together for three years. Every time my parents ask me, I feel so much pressure. Isn’t it time for us to get married?” Janice clenched her fists tightly and looked at Max. She had to muster up a lot of courage to say this.
She was tired of waiting, because it made her feel that there was no hope in her life..
