Chapter 25: Attending a Dinner Party

Pete looked as though he was helpless before Shannon. He took the documents from Shannon and left the room.
She stood up and walked to the French windows to look at the city. These French windows were her only requirement when choosing a location for their firm.
This was because she had once heard that Max’s office had the same layout.
She wanted to know how he felt when he stood in front of the French windows and looked down at the city. She wanted to try to feel how he felt.
Perhaps one day, she would know why he was so ruthless, to the point that he could get rid of his own baby.
But after standing there for a while, she still couldn’t understand his state of mind.
“Miss Zanders, Mr. Matthew is here.” Gina’s voice broke the silence in the room.
Shannon immediately turned around. Why was Matthew here at this time?
“Let him in.” She got up and went to her door to wait for him.
Unexpectedly, Matthew was carrying a huge bouquet of lavender, and the entire company was filled with the fragrance.
“Congratulations, Shannon.” There was a pink hue on Matthew’s cheeks.
Shannon was slightly fazed. She knew the meaning behind giving lavender. Moreover, Matthew was such a meticulous person, the flowers he gave would certainly have some significance.
“Thank you. Come on in. If there was anything, you could have just called me. You didn’t have to come here personally,” Shannon took the flowers and said in an extremely polite tone, but she didn’t dare to look at him.
She had a sudden premonition that she might not want to hear what he was about to say.
“Shannon, have you ever thought about beginning a new life with someone else?” Matthew didn’t sit down; instead, he stood behind Shannon, who was putting the flowers into a vase.
Shannon’s fingers froze when she heard him say that. Begin a new life? Did she have a chance to start over?
“A few days ago, my family asked me to go on a blind date. I told them that there’s a girl whom I like. She is very gentle, kind, and worthy of my love. They are all very happy.” Matthew’s gentle voice came from behind her.
Shannon was extremely touched, but her heart was still, without any ripples.
“Matthew, my heart will never beat for any other person ever again. I’m sorry.” Shannon turned around, a rare seriousness appearing on her face.
“It’s alright. I’ll give you time. I don’t even need you to be moved. I just want you to be happy. You can slowly consider it. I won’t take up your time any further.” Matthew was afraid that Shannon would feel awkward, so he left her office after saying that.
Shannon sat on her chair with tears in her eyes.
When Matthew confessed, her mind was only filled with Max.
She suddenly felt that she would never be able to cross that hurdle in her life.
“Casey, there’s a dinner party tonight. Let’s attend it together. Come on, I’ll accompany you to pick out a dress.” Pete suddenly opened her office door.
Shannon didn’t want to stay in the house later, so she got up and followed him out.
The sky darkened. Under the evening light, the summer breeze carried the scent of flowers, creating an intoxicating feeling.
Shannon was dressed in a fitted white dress. A large bow was on her chest, making her appear pure yet sexy. Her long and wavy hair was let down loosely over her shoulders, and her perfect silhouette was faintly discernible.
Her clean and beautiful appearance attracted everyone’s attention the moment she reached the entrance of the hotel.
“Shannon, you really amaze me. You’re very beautiful today.” Pete praised Shannon continuously.
Shannon did a small curtsy and smiled.
“Thank you. Did you ask me to attend this because there’s someone you want to introduce me to? To think that a newcomer like you would actually have so many connections in our city.” Shannon held Pete’s arm and walked inside as she teased him.
When she looked up, she suddenly saw a familiar figure in the crowd. The smile on her lips instantly disappeared. Max? He was here too?
“It’s precisely because we don’t have any connections that we have to come to such gatherings often.” Pete’s blue eyes revealed a hint of craftiness.
Shannon suddenly stopped in her tracks. If Max was here, then Janice must be here too.
“Let’s go. I suddenly feel a little unwell.” Shannon suddenly pulled Pete out. She didn’t want to see Max and Janice appear together in front of her.
Pete was puzzled. If she wasn’t feeling well, she would have said so earlier.
“Casey, is there someone in here that you don’t want to meet?” Pete stood still; he could already guess what was going on.
Shannon lifted the hem of her dress and wanted to walk out, but when she looked up, she saw the dazzling Janice who was wearing a long red chiffon dress, looking gentle, elegant and charming.
Everyone’s eyes were focused on the entrance of the banquet hall. Janice’s red dress and Shannon’s white dress formed a sharp contrast.
The moment Janice saw Shannon, she was stunned too. Their eyes met and there seemed to be gunpowder in the air.
She didn’t expect that Shannon would ever be this beautiful, looking like a freshly bloomed white lotus.
Could this be the reason why she had been unable to walk into Max’s heart for the past three years?
At the thought of this, Janice’s eyes flashed with a subtle hint of jealousy, but it disappeared in an instant.
In the blink of an eye, her face was brimming with a perfect lady’s smile as she lifted her skirt and walked in.
“Max, I’m not late, am I?” Janice’s gentle voice sounded behind Shannon.
Shannon suddenly thought of her reason for coming back. She came back because she wanted to stop hiding. She didn’t owe anyone anything, so why did she have to hide? There was no need to do so!
“Casey, are you okay? Do you want to—”
“I’m fine. Let’s go in.” Shannon squeezed out a faint smile and turned to walk inside.
Max followed Janice inside, and a familiar figure suddenly appeared before his eyes.
Shannon? He stopped in his tracks and a look of surprise flashed past his eyes. He had never seen her dressed like this.
Janice raised her beautiful eyes to look at Max. She saw the surprise in his eyes.
On this hot summer day, she actually felt a little cold.
“Casey, stay here for a while. I’ll be back soon.” Pete abandoned Shannon the moment he entered the banquet hall.
Shannon picked up a glass of wine and swirled the contents in her glass. Under the chandelier, the red wine was like a bloodthirsty venomous snake. In the past, she didn’t understand what was so good about alcohol, but in the past three years, she had relied on this to relieve her worries whenever she was troubled.
She picked up the wine glass and took a sip. Through the wine glass, Max’s figure stretched endlessly. He was still so handsome, perfect like the most exquisite work of a sculptor.
She used to be so infatuated with him. Now that she thought about it, most of her memories of those three years of married life were of her waiting for him to come home every day.
Everyday, as long as she saw him by her side, she felt extremely happy..
