Chapter 29: I Don’t Accept It

“You’re a jerk, Max Wenley. Don’t ever think about receiving my forgiveness in this lifetime. Never…” Shannon fell back onto the bed as she spoke.
Matthew was extremely shocked. Max Wenley? There was only one Max Wenley in this city.
Was that why everyone around him didn’t know where Shannon was, and who she was married to?
“Shannon, tell me, you…” He couldn’t resist asking Shannon, but her even breathing could be heard from the bed.
Matthew walked downstairs uneasily, then placed a glass of honey and milk by her bedside before leaving.
The next day, when daylight filtered into the house, Shannon woke up and had a splitting headache.
She winced as she sat up, and subconsciously picked up the cup. Suddenly, she saw the post-it on the cup.
“I’ve ordered breakfast for you. It’ll be here when you wake up. Don’t drink so much in the future.”
Shannon recognized Matthew’s handwriting immediately. He really took meticulous care of her.
Was he the one who sent her home last night? She drank too much again.
Every time she thought of Max, she couldn’t control herself. It was as though she had lost her soul.
She had to get drunk, and would only come back to her senses when she woke up from her drunken stupor.
“Casey, someone is looking for you at the firm. Let’s go there quickly please.” Pete pressed on the doorbell furiously.
Shannon immediately opened the door, got changed and went to the firm with him.
“President Zanders, you have a guest inside.” Gina came out to greet her as soon as she arrived at the entrance, a hint of nervousness in her eyes.
Shannon looked at Gina with a puzzled expression. Why was Gina so nervous? She assumed that the guest visiting was Matthew.
“Why are you here? I really don’t have the mood to…” Unexpectedly, when Shannon opened the door, she saw Max’s figure.
She was stunned. Why did he come to her firm?
Max turned around and waved his hand, and immediately, the door was shut.
“What are you not in the mood for?” He walked towards Shannon, his voice cold.
Shannon sat down on her office chair, which was beside him, not intending to reply.
“You didn’t use to drink in the past.” Max pulled out a chair and sat opposite Shannon.
Shannon looked up suddenly, her eyes filled with shock. How did he know that she drank?
“You said it yourself, that’s all in the past. People will change.” She switched on the computer in an attempt to hide her panic.
Max stared intently at the woman in front of him. She had indeed become more capable, but somehow, he still felt that she was still the same Shannon from the past.
“I can offer you the position of Wenley Corporation’s legal advisor.” Max took out a contract and tossed it onto the table.
Shannon frowned. What was he trying to do? Was he feeling guilty and now trying to make it up to her?
“There’s only one condition. Just continue your job as a lawyer, and cut off all intimate contact with any other men.” His last line angered Shannon.
Was this the reason for his visit?
“Wenley Corporation’s legal advisor. If I work with such a large corporation, I probably won’t have to be worried about my livelihood for the rest of my life. You’re really generous.” Her pink lips curled into a sneer.
She used to like how domineering he was. He was the one who made all the decisions for her; this made her think that he was especially manly.
But now, she was a little angry at his tyranny.
“I don’t accept it. We’re already divorced. It’s my freedom to do whatever I want, and marry whomever I want. My law firm won’t accept your request. You can leave now.” Shannon stood up and opened the door, making a gesture for him to leave.
Max sneered and walked towards Shannon, his gaze cold.
“You can choose not to accept it. However, as for my woman, even if I don’t want her anymore, others wouldn’t dare to take her too. You can choose to be disobedient, but if that’s the case, I don’t mind letting everyone know that you’re my ex-wife.” The cold and overbearing words rang in Shannon’s ears.
She turned her head and refused to look at him. Was she going to have to accept such tyranny for the rest of her life?
“Sure, I don’t mind either. You can go to the major media outlets and publish the news now. I’ll still do what I want. You’ll be the only one who will have to deal with the embarrassment.” Shannon suddenly felt that she wasn’t the one who should be afraid, so she met Max’s cold eyes with a determined gaze.
Max looked at Shannon; she had really changed.
She actually dared to negotiate with him. Was she trying to fight him to the death?
“Shannon, you’d better be obedient.” Max pressed Shannon against the door, his low voice laced with threat.
Be obedient? How could he talk to her like that?
“If I wasn’t obedient, you wouldn’t have brought Janice back to humiliate me. If I had been a strong and overbearing woman from the start, I wouldn’t have had to hide around when I was pregnant. And it’s precisely because I was too obedient that my baby left me.” Shannon’s eyes were filled with tears, and her heart felt like it was being stabbed by knives.
When Max heard her words, he recalled the afternoon back then, and suddenly frowned deeply.
“What happened then…”
“At that time, you met the love of your life. I was willing to leave, but you pushed me into a corner. Now, I want to live according to my own wishes. You can’t intervene in my matters anymore. Leave. I don’t wish to see you anymore.” Shannon opened the door and pushed Max out of her office.
She shut the door tightly and slid to the floor.
Till now, she could still feel the pain that she felt when she found out her baby had left her. Her body trembled uncontrollably.
She wished she could tear Janice’s friend into pieces. It was that woman who killed her baby.
“Leave this for her.” Max took out a cheque and handed it to Pete, then strode out of the firm.
Pete knocked on the door of Shannon’s office, but there was no response.
“Casey, are you okay? Let me in…”
“I’m fine. You can go back to your work.” Shannon got up from the ground, her voice trembling slightly.
Pete had already guessed what was going on. He dismissed the onlookers around and returned to his office.
Shannon got up and walked to the sofa, but crumpled onto the carpet. She then leaned onto the sofa, while tears fell down her face uncontrollably.
She wanted to forget all the unhappiness, but the more she tried to forget, the more deeply etched those memories became.
Every time she thought about it, every bone in her body ached.
“I’ve checked. President Wenley went to the newly opened law firm upstairs. The founder of that law firm is Shannon.” Janice, who had been tailing Max since the morning and who was waiting downstairs, just found out about this piece of information.
She sat in the car as tears flowed out from under her sunglasses. She couldn’t wait any longer; otherwise, her fiancé would become Shannon’s.
“I need to see her. You—”
“Ma’am, I’d advise you against meeting Shannon. If President Wenley finds out, the consequences would be unthinkable.” The driver stopped Janice.
She took off her sunglasses and looked upstairs. Indeed, Max knew every move she made, and if he found out that she went to meet Shannon, he would surely be unhappy..
