After patrolling the town, Murphy returned to meet with the two aborigines.
The lady, who seemed to be a noble, was still wearing her veil today, but she was no longer dressed in her blood-stained gray-black cloak. Instead, she had on a lady’s dress that had silver-threaded peonies embroidered on it. This was meant for lord ladies, which meant it had been lovingly prepared by Murphy’s attendant. In this world Murphy had just reached the age of sixteen, so he needed a “nanny,” or attendant.
The conversation between the two parties was amicable, as both were testing the waters.
Murphy planned on learning the situation outside the town so he could deepen his understanding of this world. Conversely, the two aborigines hoped to find out from Murphy where the Greeks were from, why they had migrated here, and their population size, among other things.
But the two aborigines ended up asking more questions than him during their conversation.
Murphy had maintained the noble elegance he had shown the first time they met, which caused the two aborigines to feel uneasy, and like he was hard to read. But why did they think he was a noble? Murphy was merely acting calmly, as he was the product of the information explosion. As long as a person was calm when handling matters, they would naturally have an air of Western noble elegance.
Calm down, calm down.
As for the questions the two aborigines asked him, Murphy’s answers to them were always ambiguous. He vaguely introduced himself as someone who had come from the West and had only been in this land for a short time. As for questions that were inconvenient for him to answer, he answered them with a single sentence.
These two aborigines were unrelated to him, and yet he had saved them. He was under no obligation to answer their questions. Fortunately, these two aborigines were extremely slick characters who knew when to stop asking questions. If they weren’t, Murphy was contemplating cutting them up and throwing them to the gnolls.
Yes, this wasn’t a joke.
When they realized they weren’t going to get any new information out of Murphy, the veiled lady requested that Murphy send a team of soldiers to escort her through the gnoll’s defense to the rear of the human forces. She expressed to him that once this task was completed, he’d receive a generous reward in return.
There was no doubt about it in Murphy’s mind. He refused the request without hesitating.
The military strength in Athens was already insufficient. Besides, the gnolls were gradually coming closer. Currently, there were only about four teams of soldiers in Athens, and less than three hundred people, including the General Guards.
To send a team of soldiers to escort a lady through the gnoll’s defense to the rear of the human forces?
What a joke!
Who does she think she is?
Although Murphy knew that this lady was most likely a noble of high status, upon hearing her request, he couldn’t stop a sarcastic smile from appearing on his lips.
He saved her because she was a noble, but at the end of the day, she was just a noble.
Yet she was trying to take advantage of her position to ask for a favor?
Murphy wasn’t dumb. There was nothing in all the world they could give him that would make him attempt such a thing.
When he heard the idiotic request the aborigines had come up with, Murphy suddenly didn’t feel like continuing the conversation with them any longer. Besides, the information he’d gathered from them was sufficient for his purposes, and he was afraid that leaving a few aborigines in Athens could invite some unnecessary trouble.
Therefore, Murphy said very simply that if they were eager to leave, he could give them some food and weapons for their journey.
This was as good as kicking them out of the town.
The veiled lady couldn’t help but feel embarrassed when Murphy said this.
Her questioning had obviously made the young Lord unhappy.
And she then realized that she had been reckless.
She was no longer the high-status Marchioness. Her city and her citizens had fallen to the claws of the gnolls. Now, she was just a wandering noble with no territory or wealth to her name. She was left with almost nothing. Even her change of clothing had been given to her by the Lord in front of her. Once she realized her current status, everything became clear.
When Lady Elizabeth thought about it like this, she realized just how rude she had been before when she had made him that request, even though he had saved her before.
Now that she knew where she stood, she could bring the conversation back on track.
Lady Elizabeth felt a pang of regret in her heart. She suddenly understood why the friendly young Lord’s attitude had suddenly changed, and why he was trying to chase her away. Putting herself in his shoes, she realized just how disrespectful and laughable her request was!
Sending a troop of soldiers to escort a lady they didn’t know to the rear of the human forces, all while facing the possible danger of being surrounded by gnolls?
Was she really about to disregard the town’s security and the lives of its residents in the interest of her own safety?
How laughable!
After much consideration, a hint of shame appeared on Lady Elizabeth’s face.
She had to admit that she’d been blinded by her pride, which had made her come up with such a rude request.
What was she to do now?
She was finally safe for the time being, and yet she was about to leave and dance with death again?
Her guards were all heavily wounded. If they left the town now, a single troop of patrolling gnolls might be enough to claw their bellies open.
The ordeal of escaping had become a total nightmare!
After the town wall fell, an eagle-banner shield infantry troop and an elite cavalry troop had escorted her from the town.
Only three days had passed since then. Only one family knight and a few Star Zero escorts were following behind her. Even the horses had been lost in the brutal escape. In the end, they reluctantly had to abandon all their belongings and head to the small roads over the mountains to escape the gnolls. Unfortunately, those small, sensitive creatures were still able to catch up to them. Luckily, they had discovered the Athens’ lumber yard. If they hadn’t, they would have been gnoll food.
What was she to do now?
Beg him to allow her to stay?
She was too ashamed to beg, because she still had her noble pride, but she knew that if she left, she’d become gnoll food in a matter of days.
Fortunately, Murphy rescued her from her dilemma.
“Of course, if you aren’t in a hurry to leave at the moment, you can stay here for two days to rest and recover,” Murphy said. With that, he turned around and walked toward the Governor’s Mansion. When he left the hall, he called for the head maidservant and instructed her to clean up his own room and arrange for the noble lady to stay in a normal servant’s room.
In the whole Governor’s Mansion, only his room could be considered luxurious. Because he was a gentleman, out of respect for her, Murphy had allowed her to rest in his own room while he made do with the study room for a night. But he now knew that there was no need at all for him to be polite to such a lady.
A woman like that deserved a serious beating!
Otherwise, she’d keep thinking she was the center of the world.
Even if she had a slender and curvy figure, a thin waist, an ample bottom that made men lust, and eyes as beautiful as sapphires… Murphy wasn’t some hermit who’d never seen a woman before. As long as a man was in power, things like women, especially the pretty ones, were his for the taking, and he could have any kind of woman he wanted. He wasn’t a hermit who hadn’t seen the world and still looked forward to romantic love. Besides, even in school there weren’t many people like that left.
Murphy, being sensible, told himself this.
Men need courage in what they do. A bold man doesn’t worry about finding a wife. If he does, then he isn’t bold.
Although he hadn’t exactly been generous, he’d been courteous from the start.
Since this lady didn’t know what was good for her, then he no longer had to be polite. If they were honest and well-behaved, then it wasn’t out of the question to let them stay. After all, there were still many things that needed to be understood about the aborigines arriving into this world. If they didn’t know where to draw the line, then he would simply kill them and feed them to the gnolls.
The gnolls outside the town were already a headache for Murphy. He didn’t have the energy to waste on these aborigines.
He called for an attendant after leaving and instructed him to arrange for a few people to follow the two aborigines. On the surface, they would attend to their needs, but their actual purpose was to monitor them. Murphy’s orders were very simple. Whenever the two aborigines left the Governor’s Mansion, someone was to follow them. If they noticed any strange activity, they were to report it to General Hamilton, who would immediately kill them.
Murphy didn’t show any mercy where his own safety was concerned.
In Murphy’s previous life, he had once opened a business, which was quite successful. However, he was unable to stay in business due to a rich competing family. It was a one-sided battle, once the rich family’s resources and connections widened the gap between them. Compared to his wealthy competitor, Murphy was only a commoner with no chance of succeeding. Left with no other choice, Murphy could only set his pride aside and beg the other party for a way out.
However, the other party seemed to want to completely destroy him and left him with no way out.
It was a bleak end. By the end of it, Murphy owed a large debt, and his business had to shut its doors. And the man who had “decisively destroyed” him died a few months later in a “car accident.”
It was barely considered a draw.
He destroyed Murphy’s business and his life.
Murphy sold his house and relied on his savings to repay his debts. Within a short time, he was debt-free.
Murphy felt somewhat discouraged as he looked at the red sun streaks in the sky. Relying on his connections, he had found a company and managed to climb up to the position of associate manager. He took a six-figure salary and wasted his life away. During his off days, he used to play video games or flirt with girls, but he didn’t know when he would find his enthusiasm to do those things again. Occasionally, he would take a stroll to see if he’d come across a girl who might catch his eye.
Despite being unable to find a girl, Murphy had found a decent game to play: .
After that, he mysteriously arrived in this unfamiliar world.
