“You don’t have to be so tense,” Jay said, noticing that she was nervous. “I don’t like to force people to do things they don’t want to, but I did buy you for a reason. I need you to do something for me.”
Maisy understood what the man meant and nodded to show that. “I understand. I’ll be prepared for anything.”
“Good girl.” Jay patted Maisy’s head as if she was a little pet. Her hair was soft, smooth, and thick like silk, and it was a pleasure to touch. “When will you be prepared?”
Maisy’s mental state had completely changed since she was sent to the Aphrodite Club and spent more than 10 days there. At first, she was sold by her father to some thug, then she was resold by them to the club. In the end, the man in front of her was the last to have bought her. Even though transactions as such violated every human right in existence, the man did save her from being treated like a prostitute. As long as she wasn’t requested to do illegal things, such as killing or robbing, she was willing to do anything for him.
However, even though she didn’t want to say it, the most important reason that Maisy was willing to do anything for Jay was that he was very handsome and gentle. Although he might have seemed like a cold person at first—a person who was extremely hard to approach and get close to—after talking to him, she started to realize that he was actually a kind person. She was thankful to him for getting her out of a tight spot.
“I don’t know…” Maisy said. “Can you give me some time to prepare?”
It was as if Jay was satisfied with the lady’s struggle and smiled. He respectfully took a step back and took a sip of his red wine. “Your stuff is in my room. You can go get it,” said the man, which felt like he was rewarding her for accepting his request.
Maisy’s eyes widened. She immediately thought of her phone. She quickly ran back to the room and found a white Ziploc back inside the drawer of the bedside table. Inside the bag was her phone and documents, things that were taken away from her when she was sold to the Aphrodite Club.
“Thank you,” Maisy thanked Jay when she came back up. “You really are a nice person.”
Jay could only shake his head with a bitter smile.
The first thing the lady did was call her grandfather. However, instead of her grandfather answering the call, it was picked up by a nurse at the hospital. “How can you drop the patient here and leave?” the nurse scolded. “Do you think the hospital is a charitable foundation? You have to pay the medical fees!”
“Hospital?” Maisy immediately thought of her grandfather getting pushed down and tears filled her eyes instantly. “What happened to my grandfather?”
The words that the nurse told Maisy later were like knives slicing pieces off her heart. When her father sold her, her grandfather had got beaten by the thugs because he tried to protect her. To begin with, her grandfather’s body was weak. After being treated badly, he had suffered a heart attack and almost lost his life.
“You should prepare the money for his surgery,” added the nurse. “You still need to pay $30,000 for the admission and hospitalization fee, and another $500,000 for the surgery.”
It was basically impossible for Maisy to pay the hefty hospital bills. Her first reaction was to head to the hospital right away, but she didn’t have any clothes with her and her purse only had a few coins left. That was all she had. She was so broke that she couldn’t even afford the bus fare.
She was completely helpless and in pain. She was angry at her parents for being so unreasonable. At the same time, she was thankful that God had given her a grandfather who loved her a lot.
Maisy’s only dream ever since she was a child was to earn a lot of money and let her grandfather live a comfortable life. But, in the end, not only was her grandfather dying, but she also lost her freedom. If her grandfather really passed away, she would’ve blamed herself for the rest of her life.
Maisy’s grandfather had led a hard life after her father had borrowed a lot of money from loan sharks for his gambling addiction. He had been living in poverty for the past 20 years. She could not just sit back and watch him die like that. She knew she had to do everything she could to save her grandfather.
After making up her mind, Maisy walked to the room next to hers and knocked on the door..
