Chapter 39: Preparing for a Surprise

I shook my head. How could a five-year-old boy possibly understand what a twenty-year-old girl was thinking? I found a random excuse and said, “No, I’m just tired.”
Randall took my hand and walked out of the school gate. Mrs. Kelly was already waiting by the side of the road.
The car started and soon we were back at Randall’s house. Mrs. Kelly took my hand and walked into the house. I turned my head and suddenly saw clusters of roses in the yard blooming beautifully.
“Mrs. Kelly, can I pick some roses? Uncle Steve has been working too hard. I want to make a bouquet for him,” I asked carefully.
“Of course,” Mrs. Kelly agreed without a second thought. She even helped me find special gloves, scissors to cut the flowers, and blue seeds.
“Sheila, there are thorns on the roses. You must be careful,” Mrs. Kelly reminded me several times. After making sure that I was fine, she turned around and went to the kitchen to prepare dessert.
I clumsily held the scissors in my hands and shakily cut off a rose. Actually, it wasn’t difficult, but I was too small and didn’t have enough strength, so I had to cut off the roses one by one.
Mrs. Kelly offered to help me, but I refused because I wanted to rely on my own strength to prepare the surprise for Uncle Steve.
Thinking about how Uncle Steve didn’t have a good night’s rest to protect me last night, I became even more determined to prepare his surprise.
I was trying to cut the flowers when the little tyrant Randall came over. He looked at me awkwardly and explained, “Don’t misunderstand. My mother asked me to come over to help you. That’s why I came over to take a look.”
I smiled and didn’t say anything. Seeing that I didn’t feel disgusted, Randall naturally squatted beside me. He saw that there were already some beads of sweat on my forehead. He asked in puzzlement, “Why do you want to go through so much trouble to cut the roses yourself? Can’t you just let the servants help you?”
I put down the scissors, raised my hand to wipe the sweat on my forehead, and panted as I explained, “You don’t understand. Of course, a gift is most meaningful when you make it yourself! If you let others do everything for you, then what’s the point of a gift?”
Randall snorted coldly, not agreeing with my opinion. He muttered, “Anyway, the result will be the same in the end. Why do you care so much? You girls are so troublesome.”
Although he said that, he still came over, and tried to take the scissors from me to help me cut the flowers.
But I didn’t let go. “It’s okay. Let me do it myself. Since I want to prepare a surprise, I must put in some effort.”
Randall saw that I was so insistent and had to give up. “Surprise? What surprise are you preparing? Are you cutting the roses to give to my mother?”
Mrs. Kelly only told Randall that Sheila was cutting the roses for her elders. Since now, Kelly was the only elder here, Randall thought the flowers were for Kelly.
“Ah? No, I’m planning a surprise for Uncle Steve. He’ll be very happy when he comes back and sees it.” I imagined Steve’s reaction when he came back and saw the gift, I couldn’t help but reveal a sweet smile on my face. I completely didn’t notice that after hearing my words, Randall’s face had completely darkened.
“It’s actually for Steve!” Randall suddenly felt a baffling sense of loss. This bouquet of flowers wasn’t for him, nor was it for his mother. It was actually for Steve!
Randall was still young, so he naturally did not realize that the feeling of disappointment and bitterness in his heart actually had a simpler name, jealousy.
After the sour feeling passed, it was replaced by a fit of belated anger. Randall did not know why he was so angry. Before he could figure out the reason, his body had already reacted before him.
Randall stood up angrily and shouted at Sheila who was squatting on the ground, “I don’t want to help you prepare gifts for others!”
When I suddenly heard Randall shouting at me, I looked up in confusion. Before I could ask what was going on, Randall had already turned around and run far away..
