“Threatened you? Fine! I want to see what they’re capable of!” Yang Heng slammed the table angrily. “Tomorrow, tomorrow I’ll personally accompany you to the Huo family.”
He had thought that the city had improved under his efforts, but to his surprise, villains were still forcibly seizing homes right under his nose, and it was happening to people he cared for. Yang Heng felt a deep sense of shame.
“Wan’er, don’t worry. I’ll sort this out for you!” Yang Heng reassured her.
“Wouldn’t that be too much trouble for Uncle Yang!” She said apologetically.
“This incident has seriously affected the reputation of Xiang Jiang City, not to mention it’s related to you,” Yang Heng said firmly.
“By the way, your Auntie Ting kept reminding me to bring you home for dinner. Do you have any plans next? If not, come with me. It’ll be a good way to relieve stress!” Yang Heng looked at Xiang Wan affectionately.
“Sure! I wanted to meet Auntie as well!” Xiang Wan replied politely. Since the elders had invited her, how could she refuse?
“Great, great. I’ll call your Auntie right away and tell her to prepare more dishes!” Yang Heng said as he walked out to make the call.
Xiang Wan smiled and thought to herself how wonderful it was to have such a caring elder protecting her. He didn’t even ask why she had investigated so thoroughly. He knew she had gone to disrupt their event knowing that they were having a banquet. Perhaps Uncle Yang had already caught onto her cautious plan.
It felt wonderful to be favored.
Let’s go, Wan’er. I’ve talked to your aunt. She’s excited and said she’ll make you braised pork ribs. You’re in for a treat! Your aunt’s braised pork ribs are exceptional, something you can’t normally eat. I’ll be enjoying it all thanks to you!” Yang Heng grinned with joy, feeling even more convinced that inviting Xiang Wan for dinner was the right decision.
“It’s all thanks to your kind invitation that I get to enjoy it!” Xiang Wan replied graciously.
“You’re such a well-mannered child, not arrogant at all.” Yang Heng looked at her with satisfaction, increasingly seeing her as an elegant young lady.
The two of them got into Yang Heng’s car and headed straight to his home—Jing Yuan.
Yang Heng often drove between his home and workplace, never finding it a hassle.
Although the government had built unit apartments nearby to provide them with a better living environment, Yang Heng rarely stayed there. He usually only spent the night when he was exceptionally busy.
Yang Heng’s wife was named Wang Ting, and she worked at a hospital nearby. That’s why Yang Heng hadn’t asked his family to move into the staff quarters. Wang Ting’s work could be busier than Yang Heng’s at times, so he had to commute. But Yang Heng was more than willing.
They had a son who was fifteen years old this year, three years younger than Xiang Wan. He also attended a school near Jing Yuan.
“We’ve arrived. You go ahead, I’ll park the car.” Yang Heng turned to Xiang Wan.
Xiang Wan nodded and got out of the car, waiting for Yang Heng to return.
At this moment, Xiang Wan was feeling quite anxious. It was her first time visiting, and she hadn’t brought anything. She felt it was impolite, but the circumstances back then didn’t allow her to buy anything.
As Yang Heng was approaching, she made a determined decision. She bought a can of aged Pu-erh tea and a bottle of perfume from a nearby mall.
These items were already available in this era, but they were relatively expensive. However, they didn’t pose much of an issue for her.
As for what to buy for the young boy, she had no clue what a fifteen-year-old would like. She ended up purchasing a puzzle decryption toy, as teenagers of that age usually enjoyed trying out new things.
Fortunately, these three items weren’t too large; otherwise, they wouldn’t have fit in her small purse.
The two of them entered an alley and saw a middle-aged woman pacing anxiously at the door.
“You’re finally back! Is this… Is this Wan’er? She’s so pretty, oh my!” Wang Ting looked at the girl before her, her face lighting up as if she hadn’t even noticed Yang Heng.
“Hello, Auntie. I’m Xiang Wan. You’re the one who’s truly beautiful, taking care of yourself so well. You look like a young lady in her twenties!” Xiang Wan complimented warmly, quickly approaching and shaking Wang Ting’s outstretched hand.
“This child knows how to talk. Come in quickly! It’s chilly outside!” Wang Ting warmly ushered Xiang Wan into the house, completely unaware of her husband’s melancholic gaze.
